Anamorphic DaVinci export

PostTue Aug 13, 2019 12:46 pm

Hi everyone,

Recently shot on the Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6k using Kowa anamorphic primes.

I'm trying to figure out if I've done the export settings correctly because the image doesn't fill the entirety of the export. I filmed at 3K anamorphic at 4:3. Attached is an image to show it.

I exported it at 3072x2560 and used the clip attributes to change it to 'Cinemascope', which looked fine in DaVinci.

When the file exports, it doesn't fill the entirety of the video. Why is this?

Just to add - I changed the project settings to 'Square' and 3840x2160. It looks like the correct way, though I just want to make sure this is the right way of exporting anamorphic.

The 3K window for the 4.6K sensor is not 4:3. It is 6:5 3072x2560, designed to suit your 2x anamorphic lenses. After you desqueeze, you can export a frame in approximately widescreen. You can downscale to DCI 2K widescreen 2048x858 or upscale to DCI 4K 4096x1716. If you want to produce UHD video for television for example, you can export a custom 3840x1608 widescreen video.

Hi Rick, thanks for your response.

I actually have a shoot tomorrow so good timing. So just to confirm, I'm going to shoot in 3K anamorphic 3072x2560 (which is 6:5?) and all I need to do is desqueeze it in DaVinci? I couldn't find any videos to show how this is done in DaVinci, any ideas?

Anamorphic DaVinci export

There’s more than one technique, but what I use:
1) leave all pixels defined as square rather than selecting options for Resolve to manage the desqueeze at the highest level
2) on the Edit Page, using the Transform on the far right panel, deselect the Zoom Link function
3) leave the X axis alone
4) enter an appropriate desqueeze value:
0.5 for a desqueeze from a 2x anamorphic or 0.7518 from a 1.33x anamorphic for Normal distances.

The only thing to watch is that your subjects are not close to the camera as the full desqueeze values may be too strong. For my 1.33x-65 Anamorphot desqueeze, I use 0.82x for the Y axis for Near subjects. You can judge it by eye or conduct tests shooting round objects.

Edit
Spelling check typed “I click the Zoom Link” when I wanted to say “unclick the Zoom Link.” Changed to “deselect”.

Additional item to watch for:
If you want to do an actual zoom, you have to set the new values manually. If not the change of X is added to Y when it must be multiplied. For example:
X = 1.000 Y = 1.000
unlink and apply anamorphic desqueeze
X = 1.000 Y = 0.500
now your subjects have the correct proportions; then you decide to zoom in the frame:
X = 1.500 -> Resolve sets Y = 1.000
You need to unlink X and Y and manually adjust:
X = 1.500 Y = 0.750.

Thank you for your detailed response Rick. I'm still a tad confused and just want to double check on two questions. Clearly numbers confuse me.

1. I've shot in in 3K anamorphic with the Kowa lenses (2x as you know). It was shot in the 3K Anamorphic option (3072x2560). (Is this 4:3 or 6:5?).

2. I want to stick with 3K for the export. What is the ideal resolution export for this?

6:5 as you capture, but intended to be used with 2x anamorphic lenses so it becomes 12:5 when desqueezed. 12:5 is a 2.4:1 aspect ratio.

That’s not a standard deliverable, but may not be a problem if it’s going to the internet to play on computers or iDevices.

If that’s what you want, in Project / Master Settings, define a timeline 3072x1280.

Then you only need to go to the Edit Page and click on the Zoom’s Link symbol in the Transform on the right side of your edit panel to unlink X and Y axes.

Then in the Y dimension, change the default value from 1.000 to 0.500. You will then see all your video data in the proper proportions.
