Edit marker data more easily

PostWed Aug 21, 2019 8:56 pm

I'd like to be able to edit marker data without having to navigate to the marker on the timeline.

It would be convenient to be able to edit the fields directly in the Index, but even a right-click option to open the marker edit dialog would be a big improvement.

And anyway, I have one more suggestion about markers but will make another thread not to hijack this one. It's about handiness of exporting markers list...

Double-click opens the marker edit dialog. I find it quicker than a right-click option.

Since the edit index has no editable fields, I don't think adding data entry is an easy change for BMD.

I find using the edit index and keyboard shortcuts a very fast way to deal with markers. What is it about the way it works that is difficult?

It's not that what's there is difficult, it's that - for me - it would be faster/easier to edit marker info without having to have the marker itself visible.

Having no idea which controls the devs use I also have no idea if this is just a matter of enabling editing for some of the fields in the index or if a different component would be required. In any event, being able to edit values directly in the index would be very useful to me.

Also the focus is broken on CentOS 7, double click (or double "m") will open the window, but the focus will be elsewhere ans need an additional click with the mouse.

CentOS 6 was fine.

Since the entire Edit Index is a display-only feature with no data entry of any kind available to the user, I think it is unlikely we'll see a change very soon.

Do you know for a fact that the grid control used is incapable of edit operations? Grid controls often have read/write functionality, and if this one does, the change should be trivial.

But in any event there should be a context menu item to open the marker dialog.

Afaik there are no view-only tables in Qt, adding edit capability to field should be pretty easy. Table view references some kind of model and models are always editable, views themselves just do what they are told to do, either not allow editing, provide default edit widget or custom delegate.
I do stuff.

So given the modern architecture, it sounds like an easy change.

Changes in big software are never easy because you also need some mechanics that deal with those changes in table but it definitely isn't in the "not possible" land either.

Why a contextual menu when it's the slowest way to edit marker data?

How is it the slowest way? When I'm in the index, why should I have to navigate to the marker itself to open and edit the marker data? Is that faster?

When I select a marker in the Edit Index it takes me directly to the Marker on the timeline and then I press 'M' key to edit the marker. I can also use the keyboard to go to the next/previous marker directly without having to go back to the edit index. Personally I would find a right-click and select from a menu slower than pressing the 'M' key.

I didn't realize I could use the M key from within the Index. That will do it, thank you!
