Unregulated power - Tilta N

Hoping someone can help me.
I’ve read (with some confusion) about unregulated power potentially blowing an ursa mini via dtap connections. Is this just for power going IN to the camera via the battery plate or battery? Or does it affect using other comments drawing power from it?

I ask because I currently use a 5inch monitor on my ursa and power it via the batterplates dtap, and has been working fine. I now am about to buy a nucleus Nano and would like to power it via the spare usb or dtap body on my v lock battery itself (all my batteries have usb and dtap).

I’m worried that with the draw on power from my monitor from the plate AND the nucleus Nano drawing from the battery itself, may potentially blow my camera based on the little bits of information I’ve tried to search for in hear, but frankly goes above my understanding when it comes to power and voltage.

Anybody have any insight on this?

Do you have any links to some first hand reports of those blown via DTAP devices?

P = I * U
Power [Watt] = Current [Ampere] * Voltage [Voltage]
to get the Current:
-> I = P / U

The URSA Mini is consuming around 45W which means at 14.4V it will draw ~ 3 to 3.5A.
Your 5" monitor might consume around 10-15W which means it will draw ~ 1A.
Nucleus Nano ... powered by 14500 battery with 3.7V and 2800Ah for 6h:
2800Ah / 1000 * 3.7 = 10.36Wh / 6h = consumption of ~1,75W
If powered via USB 5V it will draw 1,75 / 5 = 0.35A from the USB port of the battery.

A standard 14.4V V-mount battery can supply easily 8A, better ones 10-12A.

So I don't see how this could do any damage to your camera.

Also, sorry no links to reported cases, they’ve always been statements from people who have ‘heard’ of such things happening. But I’m confident now with that breakdown. I’ll be powering the nucleus via the usb port on the battery whilst it’s also connected to my camera providing power.

Most of the “reported” power issues is with people trying to make camera connections while the camera and/or monitors are turned on. Always, turn all devices off (power down) before making any connection between them and the camera (also powered off), this includes making SDI and HDMI connections.

Is this the same issue people are having with p/d-tap and the pocket 4k ?

No, just operator errors. Just keep everything turned off when setting up, and connecting cables.
Then PowerUp-Devicest one device at a time, you should be golden.

Hey Abdul - you may know this already, but the nano motor really likes a little more voltage than is typically supplied by USB-C. Tilta has a d-tap to USB cable that is UN regulated- so you get the full voltage from your battery, which is great. However, it’s not quite long enough to reach from the lens motor to the d-tap in an UMP, which is annoying. (Maybe they have a longer one now?) I added a d-tap extension, because most (longer) d-tap to USB cables are made with a voltage regulator in them, which brings the voltage down to, I think, 5v

Just be sure to mark your power cable for the motor, so someone doesn’t try to charge their android with that cable!

I've seen before people saying that the Pocket USB-C port can't power the Nucleus Nano motor, but it's actually been working fine on my 4K Pocket. I'm not using it with very stiff lenses, so perhaps that's why. I hope my luck continues because it's really convenient to set it up that way when on the Movi.

Thanks all. Just to update. I've been using the Title N with just a regular usb cable from the motor to the USB port on my v lock. Works flawlessly.
