16.1b2: YouTube Delivery Bug

PostWed Sep 11, 2019 10:36 am

Delivering for YouTube in 4K 2:1 aspect ratio these days. There is no preset for 3840x1920, so I select the 2160p preset, then choose 'Custom' from the resolution dropdown, but there is no width/height textbox to enter my custom resolution. If I try to add this to the render queue, it changes it to 1920x1080.

I guess this is a bug?

Greetz!

To the best of my knowledge, YouTube's player is always 16:9, so your best option is to deliver a 16:9 file with the black baked in.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

You need to set your timeline to these settings in the Master settings menu. As you have a 1080 timeline that is why the render is reverting to it. I edit my 1080 footage, change the timeline to, in my case, 3840 x 1670 with the Custom setting, and change the scaling to full frame with crop. I can then reframe vertically any image that may need it with the Inspector. These settings will then appear in the deliver page and render that way.

The blanking will automatically appear on 16 x 9 monitors, but you will have full screen playback on 21 x 9 monitors. There is no need to bake in the blanking. This is how it looks on YT before displaying full screen.

Interesting. I've never seen anything but a 16:9 player on YouTube.

An additional bit of info from YT.

"The standard aspect ratio for YouTube on desktop is 16:9. When uploading other aspect ratios (vertical, square, etc.), the player automatically adapts itself to the size of the video, providing the optimal viewing experience based on the aspect ratio and device."

Hmmm. That has never actually been my experience. My own 2.39 videos always come out in a 16:9 player. As do any and all vertical videos I've ever seen.

It's why I just started uploading with the bars baked in.

Actually my timeline is set to 3640x1920. Resolve just changes the custom to 1920x1080 by default. I guess custom should do what custom does in other presets, let you enter a custom width and height.

As long as you change your timeline in the Master Settings menu, it should not change, and the values you entered there will be the same on the render page. This has always worked for me on Windows. Maybe there's something different in Mac OS.
