Wireless broadcast video transmitter for Ursa Broadcast

PostSun Mar 31, 2019 12:26 pm

Hi,

can someone recommend me a wireless video transmitter system for the Ursa Broadcast?

Is there a system that can also be used for intercom and with the CCU?

We use the Teradek Beam, which supports up to 1080p60 and bi-directional IFB for coms, but it does not have video return for CCU with the BM cameras. It supports multiple transmission bit rates at distances of up to 2,500 ft, though admittedly we have not used them at more than about 350 feet with line of sight. They are v-mount and have power pass-through for mounting the v-mount battery on the back of it.

One other item of note is that it generates about 2 frames of latency, so not necessarily an ideal solution for iMag situations, but can be great for sideline interviews for sports and a variety of other situations.

Please note that it has been discontinued by Teradek, but one can still find them out there.

Thanks for the reply!

I already know the Teradek Beam and was thinking about buying one a couple of years ago, but decided to go with a Parallinx Arrow (less latency).

Now I would like to upgrade and use something that is compatible with Ursas CCU and Intercom, is there any product that works with it?

Does anyone know?

Why BEAM ? Its compressed .. IM using BOLT and its works great with zero latency ..

The simple answer is workflow. We have standardized on v-mount as our camera accessory/battery mount and the Beam connects via V-mount. Additionally, the Beam itself has a v-mount to connect a battery. The whole chain is elegant, quick to set up, and easy to use. The 2 frames latency was a non-issue for our use cases and the image quality, even though compressed, is excellent. For us, it was a no-brainer vs the Bolt because of its ENG focused integration.

The Bolt is a fine product, just didn't fit as efficiently into our workflow.

There is no Wireless video only system present that supports CCU for BMD. As mostly all systems run on WHDMI chipsets. So all ANC data is stripped off and only Video and 2 channels audio are send out.

Take a look at ABonair. In this article they claim to have CCU for BMD.
https://www.abonair.com/news/2017/11/09 ... -unit-ccu/

But that is the only reference i ever found about it. Never seen it work or seen a picture about it. :?

I talked to ABOnAir at NAB to find out about this mystery press release. The first person I talked to was the guy who helped implement it into their AB512 model and he was excited to talk to me about it. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it sounds like they strip the CCU data, send it digitally through the transmitter somehow apart from the video stream, then re-embed it on the other end back into the SDI stream.

Unfortunately, I didn't get an exact price point, but it sounds like it's pretty expensive. Somewhere around $30k USD.

I was hoping something around a Teradek price, so I'm not sure if the ABOnAir is a good solution for us, but maybe it would be worth it for someone else.

Just thought I'd share.

Well maybe i can be of help. We are planning a wireless setup for the new Bolt 4K.
As a unit that will go between the Vlock plate of the Bolt and the housing. Which will enable it to have Wireless CCU and Tally with a range of about 100 / 200 meters.. So it will match with the Bolt 4K 750.

But all depends on when i get my bolt. As pre-orders will be delivered this summer. ;)

The hardware is already in a design stage.

I think that's something we'd be interested in. Keep me updated if you can.

The only other trick would be getting the talkback working for us, but I think just moving to a wireless ClearCom setup would probably be the solution and abandon the Blackmagic talkback altogether.

Excited to see what you come up with!

We also gone for Wireless Clearcom. Yes it hurts when you buy it. But it will pay out on so many jobs.

At least we have Tally with it. So it would make life a little bit easier. ;)

Hey Daniel, any update on your wireless CCU setup for BMD cameras?

Still waiting for my Bolt 4k 750 to come in. Finally they are shipping from teradek, But the pre-order pool is big, So just waiting this one out. Unfortunately Teradek did not respond to several requests to send me the measurements of the Teradek bolt 4k sender housing and screw hole pattern so we could finish our housing in CAD, and modify the PCB accordingly to get it all fit.

So when we have the Bolt 4K, we can move on and finalise the design of the housing and PCB. And hopefully a few weeks later have a first run of devices. :)

My Teradek Bolt4k arrived 2 days ago.

A lot of software still to go. As the project have been halted for some time due too a external dev project. But starting to take shape. And want to finish this soon. 8-)

The unit is a integrated Vlock plate with the hardware inside. That fits the hole pattern of the Bolt4K.
This controller will be able to CCU control Ursa, Sony, Panasonic and JVC broadcast cameras from the BMD Atem SDI Protocol. :) :geek:

We have a manufacturer now for the housings. We are finalizing the design, As we were not happy with the wireless unit that we had in the original design. So there was some redesigning involved.

We are looking into it to get the project up and running before christmas as there is a big project waiting to use the Demo unit.

And expect to start production in Q1 2020 based on pre-orders.

We will show some results in 2/3 weeks, and open up a pre-order list so we know what numbers to expect to make the first batch of units.

Will the unit be available for Wifi AND wired ethernet?
How would that work with the network connection limitations of the ATEM switchers I have just heard about?!
Would it help if there was an antenna on top?
I'm planning on running a mesh wifi network so there should be no dropouts between the APs...

No we use our own wireless module, as we deem Wifi too unreliable!!
We get our data from the SDI return video. This goes into the Transmitter were we pull all the necesary control data out the SDI signal and send this data in our own data format trough the air.

The receiver side gets the signal and transform this into control data for the camera. And for ursa's into SDI control data. ;)
