Using Two UltraStudio Mini Recorders Live - Audio Sync?

PostSat Jun 01, 2013 2:18 pm

I'm wanting to record & broadcast a two camera live event, and normally I'd use the ATEM range of products, however, with the new UltraStudio Mini Recorder, and the Retina MacBook Pro having two Thunderbolt ports, I was thinking that I could possibly use two UltraStudio Mini Recorders (which will cost me under $300) and my 15" RMBP (which I already own) and a copy of Wirecast (which I already own too).

My only concern is keeping audio (which will be from a mixing board) in sync with the cameras - anyone have any ideas how how to achieve audio sync with two UltraStudio Mini Recorders and Wirecast?

You didn't mention what cameras you were using, but if they have audio-in ports use them. That will keep the audio in sync. You only need to plug the audio into one camera (the closest to your mixer board) and tell Wirecast to use that one camera as your source. Otherwise if your cameras don't support audio and/or your audio mixer is just too far from either of your cameras, you will want something like the Behringer Shark or DEQ2496 in between your audio mixer and your laptop.

Thanks for that info!
I'm using Sony EX1R cameras. So they have audio input, but the problem is that they will be a large distance away from the audio board :(

Is there a reason you suggest those Behringer units? I have a PreSonus Audiobox USB that I was planning to plug into a USB port and tell Wirecast to use as the audio input. Would the audio not stay in sync if using the PreSonus?

The Shark and the DEQ2496 have an adjustable delay function to adjust the audio to match your video for lip sync. A USB interface does not on its own. You would plug the Behringer in between the audio mixer and your USB interface.

Wirecast offers a delay of up to 1 sec on any audio input in the Pro version.

What are you doing to get Wirecast (or any platform really) to use 2 mini recorders? The tested I did this past weekend resulted in only 1 ever being seen at a given time. (And next day 2 paperweights apparently)
