Effects on stabilized clips - update needed

PostFri Nov 15, 2019 9:27 pm

Hi! Say you have a timeline of two clips in Edit tab. First you stabilize (or turn dynamic zoom on) these clips separately, using Inspector. Then you want to apply some transition effect - cross dissolve or slide for example. So you drag and drop the desired effect into the timeline. And what happens? At the beginning of the "effect area" on the first clip the stabilization (or zoom) switches off and then the particular transition effect is added on untouched clip. In other words, when you zoom in, and see something big, it turns back to small during the whole video transition process. Help needed as it is impossible to professionally edit any sort of video when zoom/stabilization and transition effects at once are needed. The problem appeared in 16 beta and remains in 16.1. Anyone knows a workaround for this issue?

what happens when you stabilise the clip only after apply some transition effect - cross dissolve, is it still doing it?
Thank you

You’ll probably need to stabilize the handles along with the clips, trim, then apply transitions.

Workaround is simple: turn each stabilized clip into a compound clip, and then lay your transitions across the two compound clips.

You will want to stabilize the clips with extra handle length, else your compound clips won't have enough extra media to feed the cross dissolve.

If in your timeline clip A is 100 frames and clip B is 100 frames and you want a 2 second long dissolve at 24fps, you'll need to make clip A 148 frames long, stabilize that, make a compound clip, then trim off the right 48 frames. Clip B will need to extend 48 frames on the left, then stabilize all of clip B, make a compound clip, then trim the left 48 frames. Now you can complete a 2 second cross dissolve between the two stabilized clips.

Hi Michal,
It's not a new bug as it's always been like this.
All you need to do is re-apply the stabilisation AFTER the transition is applied.

If you think about it you will see that it's logical. Resolve only stabilises frames visible in the timeline rather than the whole clip, so if there is no transition, Resolve does not process any extra frames either side of an edit..

If you stabilize within the compound clip, that's the timeline for that context, and it should stabilize the whole thing (handles included).

Compound clips are unnecessary in the context of the original post.

Peter Cave's solution is the simplest, thanks Peter !

I wish UI would show some message like:
"Following effects might be now outdated: Stabilization, Effect1, Effect2. Please re-apply them."
or
"Following effects might be now outdated: Stabilization, Effect1, Effect2. Do you want re-calculate them? Yes/No" and re-calculate all listed.

P.S. I've wasted 2 days researching, trial and error, installed previous version (18beta -> 17.4.6) before got to this forum topic.
