LETS SEE SOME 4k FOOTAGE

PostWed Apr 10, 2013 4:09 pm

Once again, our delight in black magics ground breaking releases has got us all making orders for cameras that most of us haven´t even tested let alone seen!

So seriously, lets at least have some samples!

Also, important to see the downscaled 1080 from the new sensor,
according to BM its "beautiful"
but would be nice if we were allowed to judge this oursleves prior to buying the camera

Can´t wait to see something!

you would think that BM would have sent out cameras to some beta testers

and that they would be uploading for the announcement at NAB

Not sure of the details of the downscaling in camera, but certainly if you bring the raw into Resolve, you should have enough colour information in the 3840x2160 images to generate 1920x1080 ProRes 4:4:4 HQ which isn't too shabby!

You want to see sample video from a camera that's still in early beta form (at best)?

OK, but personally I'm much more interested in seeing footage from an all-but-final pre-production or first-run production unit BMPC-4K camera -- which is still months away.

In the meantime, I've placed a no-obligation, no-deposit pre-order for a BMPC-4K with my dealer. I've got plenty of time to decide to keep or cancel my pre-order by the time "final" sample footage becomes available.

Cheers.

I think we just want to see anything, Pre-Beta, Pre Feta cheese for all care, just get something
"THAT LOOKS AWESOME" from the Production camera out for us to view, I get it, Maybe it's far from ready, But when it's a rats ass close to shipping, I hope we see something at least

Keep in mind that the 1080p video image from all Canon DSLRs are downscaled full sensor images and many of them suffer from morie' issues. Let's hope BMD has solved this problem.

Once again at the very end of one of the videos at NAB, Tim from BMD was quickly asked about problems on the BMPC4K like moiré, and he responded that it was not a problem. It was an awfully quick response for one of the most nagging problems on the BMCC so let's see when the beta cameras are released if Tim was speaking accurately.

I ordered a BMCC and it came this week. I don't have it yet because of I am working and now, they announced that amazing camera but I couldn't believe them because of their really bad reputation about delivering their products on time. It is not only about cameras but also about other products as such as switchers etc.

Global shutter and s35 sensor are big pluses while it has 12 stop dr. If they will deliver camera on time I'll get one instead of BMCC. btw, of course it would be nice to see from camera but I expect nothing less than bmcc from bmd.

Moire is still there on the 4K.

There's no point showing 4K demo footage that doesn't AT ALL represent the finished camera.

The scaling in the 2.5K BMCC seems to keep everyone happy. Why the scepticism now in the 4k ?

Funny isn't it? I agree with Orsen Welles: "No wine before its time!"

I look forward to seeing BMPC-4K sample footage whenever it's looking really good, even if that isn't until the day before it ships.

Cheers.

I'm really curious as to their timetable for releasing this camera. I don't know the actual work that goes into the late stages of developing a camera, but I'd imagine it taking more than four months to get from a product that can be showed on the floor of a tradeshow but no footage can be seen and no one's had the camera for testing, to a camera that's boxed up and in a UPS truck ready to go for thousands of customers.

I've got a BMPC4K preordered, but i'm purely curious because it seems like such an aggressive launch date for where it seems they are in production.

Thanks, John. I had the feeling Tim too quickly dismissed that last second question in the one interview. I have no problem waiting to see footage when the BMPC4K is near or at its shipping date.

Fair enough, but why release yet another camera thats still not ready
surely it takes more than a few months from BETA-testing to a finished product?
or is it just down to software tweaking?

It may well be down to software issues and colour science. The hardware may well be pretty much locked down by now and production starting.

I guess I can't complain if they are testing them longer. That way all the bugs are worked out before they are shipped, leading to less returns/problems. But I'm very impatient and want to see some footage. Looks like I'll be refreshing this forum for the next 30 days x 10 times a day = 300 times checking this forum.

Note: The attached photo might not be a BMPC-4K being used by DP John Brawley.

The reason I'm posting this here is because this would be an excellent example of a type of shot for testing the BMPC-4K's global shutter sensor against (for example) the original BMCC's rolling shutter sensor.

Some rolling shutter sensor cameras would record a fair amount of jello as a result of the vibration & bumps caused by the dolly's wheels as they roll across the pavement. Using an IS lens would probably help somewhat, but some RS jello would still likely be recorded.

However, it's also possible the original BMCC can do a great job in this scenario. The proof would be in the footage. A side-by-side test with both cams mounted on the dolly at the same time, using the same settings and identical (or near identical) lenses, would be an ideal test.

Anyway, I don't know if this is a BMPC-4K being tested or shooting sample footage, but i hope JB or other beta testers do a test like this.

I believe John Brawley has been testing the BMPC-4K for awhile.

I know first-hand of at least one BMD beta tester who may be testing a BMPC-4K by now (he was expecting his a few days ago), but can't confirm because he's under NDA.

In the past BMD has given their beta testers permission to identify themselves and discuss certain aspects of the beta version cams they're using, but I don't know if this is the case with the BMPC-4K. These are pretty normal procedures for pre-release products & NDA contract limitations.

BMD is well-aware we'd like to see BMPC-4K sample footage. I'm certain they'll release it as soon as they feel it's ready to show.

So.. if i understood well.. the camera is not ready yet, and that is why there is no footage to see
but, even thought the camera is not yet ready, it has been announced months ago to be shipping on july
Wow!!!

why do they keep playing the same "never delivering" game over and over again?

That's no contradiction. The camera hardware might very well be in production already, while the firmware is still being optimised and added later. You wouldn't risk to release exemplary footage from your flag ship device until the colour science performes as good as advertised, would you?

Is the mad hatter the real CEO at BM?

Tens of thousands of successful, profitable companies worldwide regularly (pre-)announce products & services for release at a later date. There's nothing unusual about it in the slightest.

Take a look at your calendar: It's not Aug. 1, 2013 yet. After that date you can whine about BMD & the BMPC-4K if it's not shipping yet.

It's a regular m/ft blackmagic cinema camera.

It does, as it does reduce (unwanted) movement in your images. The remaining (wanted) movement suffers the same jelly effect as without IS.

Thanks for that confirmation, JB.

Looking forward to seeing BMPC-4K sample footage when it's ready.

Cheers.
