New 12g HDR Video Assist 7" release update

PostMon Dec 16, 2019 7:59 pm

I ordered the new video assist on September 16th. It dawned on me now that it has been 3 months. I am curious as to its current state. Is blackmagic holding off in order to have many more raw camera profiles ready at launch? Or are they trying to add DCI 4k 60 as it is only DCI 4K24p now, and many raw cameras output up to 12bit DCI 4k60.
Just curious as to its standing. Can't wait (but i of course can)

BM would have more sales if they maybe actually added support for their own camera...!??? i.e. the original URSA Mini 4.6k

Anyone have their hands on one yet? I saw one on instagram in the wild being used as for scopes in an office environment which seemed a good way to get some extra value out of it. But have release dates on all resellers I've spoken to (including my pre-order) have been pushed back. The Amazon link above on the 5" no longer says January either..

Am in no rush, just curious if there's a trickle of them out there already like the ATEM Mini?

I saw that someone got one on Facebook. Says they are in Sweden. So it's possible that they are shipping now.

Josh is has been previously stated, the UM 4.6 does not output the correct format raw file for the VA 12G. ;)

Could this be why there doesn’t appear to be general release of the 7” Video Assist 12G? Could they be enabling the ability of the URSA Mini 4.6K camera to be able to record BRAW vía the Video Assist? That might be why BMD maintains “we’re working on it” when pressed for BRAW support in the original Mini. That might be a welcome update for Mini owners even if it costs us $995.

That would be great for me since I Stella have the original URSA Mini 4.6K as a B-Cam for the G2 at the moment.

I received my 7" earlier this week. Solid unit! I do wish my Ursa broadcast units could output BRAW to it, especially now they support internal BRAW recording.

Congrats on getting your unit. Any chance Bluetooth is in the Video Assist 12G for camera control?

I got mine earlier today, and I can say its color is a bit better than my Ninja V at the same brightness level. The adjustments to contrast saturation and the insane nits control is great. As always the OS is very intuitive and clean. The full metal constructions feel very sturdy.

It seems to read the batteries wrong, not 100% sure what is going on. I put in a fresh Sony made F970, and after about 10 mins at 1000nits it said it was at 87% about 20 min later it claimed 68%. I put the Battery back on my Sony made charger and it said it was at full after a minute of charging. Say what you will, my guess right now is that the percentages are just wrong.

New 12g HDR Video Assist 7" release update

Thanks, Rob. I wonder if Kelly lives in the Victoria area? I watched several of her videos. Would be interesting to touch base with her.

Edit:
Found her. In Victoria BC.

A question for the technically savvy: We owners would all like to see Blackmagic RAW on the original Ursa Mini 4.6K...If the problem of implementation has been lack of processor power, and the 12G SDI output can send the new Video Assist, which has a faster processor, a RAW feed; then what would prevent BM from supporting BRAW on the original UM 4.6K?

If the original camera can be updated to send the raw sensor data over the sdi, then it would be a matter of blackmagic analyzing the sensor (time). Then writing the code for that sensor and presumably the handshake of the SDI from unit to unit (time). After that I bet they would have to go through a fair amount of testing to make sure that no combination setting on the URSA or Monitor would cause an error (more time). and since time equals money (no one works for free and it takes them off other tasks), they would have to be able to figure out how many monitors they would need to sell to URSA owners in order to exceed that cost and figure the likelihood that they would indeed sell them to those users.
That is my opinion on the subject.

True, Nick. But they have profiled the sensor so they must have considered the next steps.

If the BMVA12G monitor colour changes documented here are widespread now they are shipping the BMVA12G, they may be concentrating on fixing that quickly with a firmware update before the damage is done and people no longer consider it. I can see that as priority one. Just speculating of course.
