Core SWX Poweredge and BMPCC 6K

PostFri Feb 14, 2020 6:20 am

I want to power the BMPCC 6K using the Core SWX PowerEdge brick using the DTAP to 12v 2 pin cable instead of the dummy LP-E6 battery. Will that work? Also, if I have an LP-E6 battery in the camera, will the PowerEdge via the DTAP to 12v 2-pin power charge the battery while the camera is on/off?

Core SWX responded to my two questions here and I'm just sharing the same in case you're looking at doing the same setup.
1. The DTAP to 12v 2 pin cable will power the camera if you don't want to use a dummy LP-E6 battery connector.
2. It won't charge an LP-E6 battery in the camera. In fact, they said to remove the battery when using any power tap cables.

Good that they are reiterating what BMD would has said.

I wonder why Core SWX advises that. The AC adapter that BMD supplies with the camera is rated for 12V, 2 1/2 A or 30W of power which is what the manual states is the power consumption when charging the internal battery.

The "PB-Edge" is rated at 14.8 V, 8A or almost 120W of power, which should handle it easier. Is this the battery you have?

I don't know why. The spec for the PB Edge I have is 49W (14.8VDC, 3.3Ah) at 8A max continuous load.

Personally, I think whoever responded from Core SWX really doesn't know and therefore has given you a safe answer. I personally would not be afraid of connecting this battery to the 12V input while an LP-E6 is inside the camera. Particularly if the LP-E6 is fully charged, which you'd want to have anyway. If we were talking about one of the adapters that step an NP-F battery up to 12V, I would have a different answer.

But that would be my decision for my camera. You'll have to decide for yourself what you're willing to do with your camera.

I have used the Neewer BP190W V-Lock battery with D-Tap to power my Pocket6K for months now. Nobody said I couldn't charge the internal battery with it and there has been no problem doing so. I always saw this as an advantage that if the V-Lock did run down, the cam could switch over to internal battery power. The camera just sees the two pin connection as any other AC source. As soon as you plug it in the red charging led next to the camera on-switch comes on, then goes to green, and finally extinguishes exactly as if you were charging from AC adapter. The battery display in the lcd shows the usual AC lightning bolt when powered from the V-Lock. The power is so abundant, I switch the camera on at the beginning of the shoot and never turn it off. After 7 hours it was still over 50% and although I carry a second BP190W, I've never needed it. Powers the camera, lens and SSD. I put the BP190W in a small camera bag and either hang it from the tripod or wear it on a belt, with a coiled D-tap > 2 pin cord. I've used this arrangement to shoot TEDx, speeches, book signings, dance recitals and weddings. Powering the Pocket 6k went from a worry to one of its best features, never run out.

Hey Tom, That's my thinking too. I was planning on doing that until the support person from CoreSWX said I shouldn't do that. Like Michael said, the support person probably didn't know any better. I'm not savvy with electronics so I had to ask just so I don't brick my camera. I'm glad you chimed in and there's assurance that others have done this without damaging the camera.

I like the idea of having a charge on the LP-E6 batt in case I need that extra 10-15 minutes after the external battery is drained.

Actually they did, the common thread for virtually every cooked output story on prior cameras was related to external power, choose wisely.

As long as the rated voltage is respected for the two pin input, there shouldn’t be any difference between the supplied charger and a V-Lock d-tap battery.

There's more to it than the voltage. There's also the current rating of the external battery, which as to be enough to supply the current required by the camera and the current required to recharge its internal battery. If the external battery has a current rating of 3A or higher, it should be adequate for that.

The v-lock battery I linked to has a capacity to bring about 7 LP-E6 batteries to full charge. (13,200 ma/hr).

I'm not talking about the mA-hr rating of the battery. I'm talking about in the instantaneous current rating. These are two different things.

Ah, the Core SWX PowerEdge has a 2.5A so possibly not adequate. I'm choosing not to risk it then. Other V-Mount batt may be adequate but do your own research first.

2.5A is marginal at 12V -- this is a power of 30W which is the stated max power consumption of the Pocket. If the V-mount battery has a voltage of 14.8V, then it has a power capacity at 2.5A of 37W which is a comfortable margin. Question is how much voltage decrease is allowed on a V-mount battery before it shuts off, if that is above 12V then you should be OK.

Actually, the rating for the AC converter supplied with the camera is 12V 2.5A according to its data plate. The actual rating may be a bit higher, but if you wanted to be more cautious you could wait until the internal battery is charged or nearly charged before switching on the camera.

The short answer is that any fresh 14.8 volt V-Lock battery with the D-tap ->2 pin connector will run the P6K and charge the internal battery at the same time, the same as you could do with the supplied charger.

Hey guys, new here. I'm about to go all in on the BMPCC 6K and I want the bundle that comes with the PowerEDGE. I notice that it has, or rather B&H states that it has 2 D-Tap ports. The setup I had in mind was to power the camera and then power the Blackmagic Video Assist 7" with the other port using a dummy battery. Is the second D-Tap a lesser powered version of the first one or are they the same?
