Budget Graphics Card for Davinci Resolve 16?

Hello!
I am building my first PC, and I'm stumped as to what graphics card to get. My budget is $200. Will an MSI VGA RX 580 ARMOR 8GB graphics card be good for Davinci Resolve 16?

I am a lifelong adobe premiere user, but am making the switch to Resolve (hence my cluelessness about this). I know Resolve tends to use more GPU, so I want to be sure I have a solid graphics card, but of course my budget makes things more limited.

Ryzen 7 2700
B450A-pro
16 GB RAM

That's a pretty decent card, as long as you don't work in a 4K timeline with complex effects.

I can't comment on the other components, but if you look for posts by Carsten Sellberg you'll find a lot of valuable information.

If you are using the free version under Windows, you'll need to transcode H.264/265 footage for a smooth editing experience.

The new 200$ Graphics Card from AMD is called the Radeon RX 5500 XT. But if you are on a very tight budget will I ask, if you have considered to buy a 2nd hand Graphics Card?

In the link is a list of 9x B450 Motherboards all with 2x M.2 sockets. As I remember do 5-6 of them have two NVMe slots. One 4x PCI and one 2x PCI. This is what you want from a B450 Motherboard.

Another upgrade possibility.

I'm not a fanboi-type and choose my hardware based solely on its performance and suitability.

When I was really working to a budget I opted for the NVidia GTX1060/6GB and it's worked out pretty well. Perhaps you could find a second-hand card that would represent better value than a new one of lower spec.

I'd say that 6GB of VRAM is the minimum you should be looking at, especially if you're running DR16 or greater.

As for the Radeon cards, they're still pretty new and this video might provide some food for thought:

NVidia also have CUDA support which is quite extensively used to good effect by DR.

Just my 2c worth -- although, with inflation, it's probably only worth 1c these days.

I also use the NVidia GTX1060/6G for HD and 4k projects. It's fine for HD but a little underpowered for really smooth 4k editing. I mostly do 4k colour grade jobs and it's ok for that purpose.

Some third-party effects, like Sapphire, are only accelerated by CUDA. That would also speak for NVIDIA.

I recently acquired a MSI GTX 1660 Super card, and I paid 250 Euro. It is fast, dead quiet and doesn't consume much energy. I could overclock it another 10 percent. I think for Resolve it is a very good entry level card.

So, for Resolve, would Vega 56 be better than NVidia GTX1060/6GB? Or is Nvidia better because of CUDA?

As for Motherboards, what would suggest that is in the same price range as B450A Pro and has 2 NVMe slots?

i think the answer depends on what kind of work you are going to do with Resolve, is it only simple cut/edit with adding sound or are you going to make heavy projects with dozens of video tracks and fusion effects?

i'm using 1080P footage and even some 4K and my GTX 1650-S 4GB (~160$) so far is doing the job for the type of usage i'm doing (amateur video editing, mostly travel videos, basic cuts, color grading, some fusion).

if you are going to use fusion a lot then consider also upgrade your RAM as i noticed 16GB runs out quickly. in my opinion there is no point buying an expensive card while your usage will normally utilize only 60% of its capabilities... it is better to invest the money (the remaining 40$) to remove potential bottlenecks in RAM and storage (i.e. having a small size SSD like 128GB which are quite cheap today to be used as scratch disk for caching which can significantly improve playback and rendering).

The RTX 2060 is only a bit faster than the GTX 1660 Super. The RTX 2060 Super however is an interesting option because you can get it with 8 Gb VRAM, which is a plus. But both cards are quite expensive compared to the 250 Euro for a GTX 1660 Super, and a long stretch from the 200 Dollar suggested by the OP.

i found this thread debating exactly this question.

for 1080p, 24fps, some fusion effects but nothing too crazy. (mostly titles and transitions)

im thinking of a ryzen 5 3600 or a r7 2700 (comments here?)

and cant make up my mind with the graphics card

1660 super or 2060 or 2060 super? seems the question is if its worth it to get the tenser cores cause its 6gb in either case (except on the 2060 super) and not crazy performance increase afaik

would you see your self useing the effects the the tensor cores support like optical flow, deflicker, object removal?

if so, buy the best RTX20xx you can afford

thats great advice man, im not going to use those effects AT ALL.

now its making me consider other gtx cards on the 10xx range. would you recommend me to look at anything else besides the 1660 super? (those 6gb seem like a must from most people i hear from tho)
