Choosing ssd.

Hi finally i have my bmcc. But now im trying to buy a sandisk extreme 240gb ssd. I read a lot of reviews and i think is the best, but now i cant buy this because is discontinued, and the sandisk option is ultra plus, but im not sure if works for raw. Please helpme anybody test this ssd with the bmcc?

I've noticed most of the 'recommended' drives are now discontinued, it's like a most other things that are on BM's recommended lists, they test something when the device is first released and then don't bother testing anything new when the old boards/drives etc are discontinued so you are left trawling through the forum to try and find something that a user has found compatible.

Also, back when the Cinema was released, SSDs weren't as standardized so it made sense to have a specific list but these days most SSDs should work fine (note: more opinion than experience.) Currently I'm using an SSHD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822178340 and it's worked great in the tests I've done though I strongly recommend a true SSD for any level of movement.

Make sure you run whatever drive you get through their Utility at least but Amazon as a good'n'cheap Samsung http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009NHAEXE

Correct, the SSHD is right in the BMCC.

Well it is known that SOME HDD's do work in the BMCC and Hyperdecks..

But there are 3 points that I would not recommend to use it.

1- Power draw. A HDD draws a lot LOT more current than a SSD (where these devices are designed for) You could blow the internal fuse and your device is ready for the trashcan. As BMD will not repair it under warranty as you did something they did not designed the unit for..

2- a HDD has moving parts inside.. Combine that with a BMCC were you are filming on location, move a lot, Possible drop or heavy shakes. If anything happen a turning HDD can get a bump. The internal mechanism will and can go bad and you lost your drive completely. If it is near FULL 1TB that means you lost a whole day of shooting..

3- HDD'S and a lot of SSD's can't catch up with write speeds. In RAW (and even in prores / dnxhd) there is so much data pushed to the drive it is running on it's max. The more high-end SSD's can handle the write speeds and so do there best so you don't loose frames or even loose a complete clip.

So you saved a few bucks on drives.. But when you have shot 2 days of video for a project and then you find out your footage has been damaged or your drive dies.. Have fun

Very much agree with all of the above and would not recommend a standard HDD at all. As for the SSHD, it was fun to test but on RAW at 30 it started to drop frames on long shots. Any sort of work should have a real SSD. http://pcpartpicker.com/ is a great place to find deals. These days even a decent 480 or 512 GB drive can be found for a good price.

Are the Sandisk Extreme II on the approved SSD list? it looks like the Sandisk Extreme are being carried by a lot of retailers or have been discontinued.

The physical size of the new version II SSD's are much smaller, and has been stated by BMD that they are NOT improved, as they can't make contact/establish a connection consistently.

regarding the kingston SSDnow's. The V200s are different from the V+200s, yes? Also, has anyone tested out the more ubiquitous V300's?

I really do wish that BMD would be a bit more explicit with their list, since a lot of these hard drives have very similar designations and the only way I have to make sure I've found the right one is to compare model numbers. Perhaps notes as to the existence of SSDs that have similar names but which are not actually approved.

What SSD dock would you recommend to offload the footage from BMCC?

Can I use the Thunderbolt port from the BMCC directly into my MBP 13"'s Thunderbolt port for offloading to external drives?

Is it a good SSD for BMCC (for prores and raw also)

I have both and they work perfectly together. I also have a 480 Sandisk Extreme. Transfer over the Thermaltake dock is fast. I get a disk speed top out at about 225MB/sec

I think at one time BMD was going to test that but I don't know if they did. We only know the SSDs they test which pass. Perhaps someone from BMD will respond or just keep checking the latest manual and BMD Support page FAQ for the cameras.

I believe that 120 gigs will get you about 16 minutes. Though I may be misremembering.

Ordering my Camera on Monday so I'm trying to line everything up.

The Sandisk is about $30 more on Amazon (http://amzn.to/18I8JYM) and has been confirmed by many to be very reliable.

Saving $30 and then dropping frames seems like false economy to me.
