Quick test

PostSat Aug 31, 2013 12:29 pm

First day tests with my BMCC mft. Trying to see how the camera handles over and under exposure in a number of tests with and without filtration. I put my daughter in the sofa in front of the windows with sunshine coming in and hitting her hair and hitting a white blanket. Shot on a Zeiss Contax 35-70 without much preparation and only held the filters in front of the lens, I underexposed her face two stops and that was a little to much to be honest as there are some noise in her skin. I also framed the picture so that I could see how the exterior would look. This is just a framegrab that I put a quick grade on, I will continue the testing when I have some more time after next week but I was so impressed with how it handled the highlights that I had to post this one.

If that was only available sunlight, the exposure looks very good. If you could have bounced some light onto her, the noise would likely disappear. If you had exposed with one stop more light, there may have been clipping on her knee, etc.

Not all avilable light. I brought her face up to 8 from 4-5.6 split as for this shot I wanted to have the face two stops under and the brightest part of the picture go above 100%. This is just a frame from a test to see how the camera handle over and underexposure and how skintones look over and underexposed. Skintones overexposed by a stop (or rating the camera at 400ASA) seems to look the best to me so far but it´s still to early for me to draw any definate conclusions. Will continue testing when I have more time.

I had the impression she shot that way face f8 and the f16 was the middle of the exposure.

F8 on face, brought up from 4 - 5.6 split with a little bounce and a kino. Brought up face in post as well as it was to dark straight from the DNG but have no value on that. When i brought it up in post it introduced a little to much noise for my taste but it is still ok, I usually like skintones a little smother without post softening. F16 base is middle of exposure, with my 1.2 IRND the lens is at F4.
