Sigma 18-35 VS Rokinon set. Lets figure this out!

PostSat Sep 28, 2013 12:34 am

Trying to decide between the sigma 18-35 1.8 and Tokina 11-16 2.8 VS the Rokinon 14mm, 24mm, and 35mm. The cost is similar enough to be a non-factor. Send me your suggestions, reviews, concerns, and prayers! Who has these lenses? How do you find them in your day to day work?

I've always preferred primes for narrative work where I have control over the production. Docs and news-style, zooms work great for fast framing. Then again, I tend to keep to the longer focal lengths as people look better than with short lenses. I like to eschew the wide-master/medium/CU sequence when I can. I'd vote Rokinons… or vintage Zeiss zebras with a speed booster, thats what I did. I can verify Franks' statement that the Zeiss act faster than their f stop rating by almost a full stop. Set it to f4 and it is as bright as about f3 on my old tokina, and the speed booster gets you one more stop above that.

If I was deciding between the sigma and a rokinon set I would buy the sigma and a rokinon 24, play with them both for a few days and then send back the one I liked least. And if I sent the sigma back I'd replace it with the other 2 rokinons.

When theres return policy's like Amazon have in the world, you might as well use it. All you have to do is print the return label and away you go. At least then you don't need to worry if you made the right decision or not.

I'm sure theres lot's of folk who could argue for one over the other but I think you need to decide what works for YOU best.

Thats my official answer. Unofficially, I replaced my rokinons with the sigma. :P

I have the Sigma and the Tokina and the Rokinon 85mm.

The above is all you need.
