BMPCC 4K Firmware Updates

PostSun Oct 21, 2018 12:34 pm

Dear Blackmagic,

First of all THANKS for this amazing camera.
Things I would like to see on the next firmware;
Missing the MOST:
Anamorphic De-Squeeze 1,33x/1,5x/2x or even better anamorphic native mode.
Waveform instead Histogram, or both!
BRaw
Missing a bit:
Focus pull point A to point B
Turn off (stand by if you are not using it 30" or 45")

Hope you consider these suggestions!
All the best
Tiago

I still would like to see the ability to store two custom white balances for all current camera models. I've suggested this to BMD support 2 years ago already. Very often I have to change fast between two rooms with different lighting or inside an outside and it would make my life so much easier if I could just toggle through 2 custom presets instead of having to do WB over and over again.

I absolutely LOVE this camera, first off. One thing that would help soo so much is to give us the option of more than 2x digital zoom to check critical focus. The peaking functions work well, but even Canon has 10x zoom for this Panasonic has 20x. 2x is ok, but not amazing. Thank you!!

Oh, while a waveform would be nice, I'd like to see one easy improvement on the histogram: the addition of small markers for 50%, 25% and 75% and a Zebra line which sits at where you have set your zebra.

My comment on the White Balance:

You may have this functionality already using the Presets tab, you could record more than two presets to cover several situations in different scenes. So when you move from scene to scene, you select the Living Room preset or the Greenhouse preset or the Kitchen preset. If those are controlled scenes, you would be changing more than just tint and temperature (such as exposure) and the Presets are a neat and flawless way to change everything with a couple of presses. I’m using that technique now.

If you're willing to sacrifice two of the three function keys, you can map each to a different WB value. One tap as opposed to 5 (for presets).

On the subject of the histogram, can Blackmagic add an RGB mode to the histogram like Red uses or is that patented? I wonder if having a histogram for each color channel would make it easier to prevent clipping when just one color starts to clip, but the grey equivalent is still in the clear.

The current HD center crop doesn't cut it.

Something huge for me, would be the possibility to turn off the display while using an external monitor. We could assign a function button for switching it on and off, double tap on the camera display, or longer press and hold on a certain button for example.. there are possibilities. I'm really looking forward to that extra function.

Robert, there's either a bug or undocumented feature for switching between two ISO settings.

Set one of the function keys to the first desired ISO value. When that's done, go back to the shooting screen and press the function key, which should give you the value you selected. Then hit "ISO" and change the setting to another ISO value. Now, if you hit the function key, you'll toggle between the two values, for as long as the power is on.

That's intentional (required extra work) and happens for frame rate, WB, etc.

Some good ideas for features that could be added but before any of that, I'd like so see some kinks worked out.

For example, the battery can sometimes die before the icon is even flashing red. You turn the camera back on, the battery now will flash red and then turn off again. The monitoring isn't very accurate and having the camera shutdown with 1/3 left is making me paranoid shooting with it.

I would say as many custom colour balances and luts as you want and as auto transition points as you move from one light situation to another to smooth the change in desired look when you activate or automatically sensed.

Before the red channel tuning happens, is this something relatively easily correctable in Resolve Colour Page with a hue change?

No. It requires a color transform in Resolve, and I'm not sure that completely cures it. Hope they can fix or improve it in firmware.

John, I did a video this year with the URSA Mini 4.6K where I had some very weird bright colour occasionally on some brass musical instruments caused by some overhead lights. It was completely distracting. I believe I was able to use a colour transform LUT on it that removed all the weirdness. I can’t recall the name, but it was just art if Resolve’s standard software. I tried several until I found one that did the trick perfectly. When I get the BMPCC4K and see this problem with red, I’ll try the same thing and report back if it’s successful.

Hello,
I’m new on the forum and first time BMD camera user/owner.

I would like to have the possibility to either lock the camera or de-activate the screen with one of the function button.

The screen sensibility is very good, maybe too good. I have a strap on the camera, I carry the camera on my neck or shoulder, every time the screen is in contact with my cloth, parameters are changed. So between two shots I have to turn off and on the camera.
Otherwise this is a great camera!

Thank you!

Super16 windowed mode for the BMPCC4K

PostSat Nov 10, 2018 10:59 am

"We do love first Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, so we have a lot of Super 16 lenses for it.

New Pocket 4K camera is called to replace old one, so we wanna use our old lenses with it. But sensor size of new camera is too big or to small(in 1080 windowed mode) for this.

So, we suggest Blackmagic Design team to add Super 16 windowed mode to new Pocket 4K camera. Let it be 2.7K or 2.8K mode, for example with 1080p downsizing in ProRes, or do it as you think it must be done.

We hope, that this would be not much hard to do technically, and we think that this feature will help to support old Pocket camera users by making upgrade to new camera for them much easy and attract more new consumers to such great product like your new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K!"

I hope with a firmware they can allow the USB port to upload footage from the SD/CFast card inside to the PC/Laptop that's connected to it.

Maybe this isn't the right place to post, but maybe. When throwing LUTs like Extended Video 4 or the Film Looks on my BMPCC4K Raw footage, it will sometimes produce a bright blue hue in the highlights (Resolve 15). I can get rid of it if I bring the highlights down (in the Raw settings tab), they gradually disappear. It's almost as if it's just an indication that those areas are blown out, but I don't know if it's just a feature I can turn off/on. It only shows up if I put a LUT on the footage, it doesn't appear in untouched RAW video. Is this a characteristic of Resolve 15, or the BMPCC4K? I own an URSA 4K but I haven't tried any footage in Resolve 15.
