Can BMPCC4K shoot 4K60 BRAW 3:1 and Q0?

PostTue Mar 12, 2019 8:13 am

I'm planning on shooting a film at 4K (DCI or UHD I'm still deciding) but I defiantly want to shoot it at 60fps. I want to get the best quality out of the camera using BRAW so my question is basically in the title, can the BMPCC4K shoot 4K60 BRAW 3:1 and Q0? Or will I need to shoot BRAW 12:1 because it's a higher frame rate?

Final question on the BMPCC4K: does the 60fps option shoot @ 60fps or 59.94fps?

If you're using something like a Samsung T5, easily.

I just looked at the data rates so it might actually be worth shooting 5:1, 8:1 or Q5 at 4K60 as not to go through so many hard drives.

Indeed, a 1TB drive gives you 60min recording time.

I think it can do both, but I can't check at the moment.

You can set your project frame rate to either 60/59.94 fps.

You need a faster storage, but yes of course
If you check on manual you see every kind of resolution / quality you can record.

I do it on simple Samsung 860 evo. 4k60 at 3:1 or Q0, 120fps fhd on both quality. For many minutes sequentially without stop or frame loosing.

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback. I actually found the BMPCC4K manual on the Blackmagic website yesterday and read it. It answered a lot of questions I had about the camera so I'm looking forward to ordering it soon.

Are you shooting the whole thing in 60fps?

I was seriously thinking about it for a long time. But now, just over the last few days, I've been rethinking the whole situation.

If I shoot 60fps, every production cost is going to go up. Including hard drives, the amount of lights we're going to need, processing power on my mac etc. Not to mention all the other issues I'll probably run into. I'm going to stick with 25fps seeing as though that is the standard here in PAL land. It's simple and everybody has trained with this format.

It would be great to shoot HFR one day when I have a bigger budget. So I think to let the likes of James Cameron push it into the norm first. I was just a bit over ambitious.

overall it's not going to sit well, they did the same thing with the hobbit, but shot it at 48fps. And a lot of people didn't like it. The motion looks unnatural, if you're doing it to get a specific look then go for it. But if you're doing just to do it then I wouldn't recommend it.

I’ve shot some 60p where there’s a lot of motion with the intention of getting the visuals to look crisp. It worked, but for a normal shoot, normal motion, I’ve stayed with 30 fps for NTSC/web. You’re smart to stay with 25 fps at this time for your project. Good luck!

Edwin, is there any specific reason that you wanted to film 60fps? I notice you are in Australia, which is a 25/50fps country and 60fps doesn't pull down really well to those frame rates or 24fps film (which 25/50fps can be conformed through by frame rate slow down/frame drop, and pitch adjustment up).

HFR specs are going 100-240fps 3D in future.

I wonder guys, is it possible to buy quality 6TB+ drives for a slow backup off media while you shoot with a second batch of media?

The reason I wanted to shoot 60fps was because I recently bought a UHD Blu-ray, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, and it plays back on my TV no problem at 60fps. So I figure if TVs in Australia can play back at this frame-rate why not start shooting at this frame-rate?

I was thinking that long ago, and I would like to know how many TV's in homes van do that now. But, because our market is supposed to be 25/50 it may not be guaranteed, but still a good idea Edwin.

People complain about this or that here, with some air of authority, leaving me uncertain if they are right or not. I haven't seen this 48fps film they complain about in order to judge. I would like to know what is supposedly wrong with 48/50/60 fps or is it a matter that they are so used to judder and blur in film, they think it is more natural (like people used to add noise to digitally shot film to make it more authentic, because that is all they were used to). There are different ways to shoot these speeds which will produce different looking results. Which ones produce a desirable look. It's obvious you have found one you like the look of.
