IP/SDI HD Or Mini BiDirect 12G only support 10-bit?

PostWed Jun 18, 2025 4:13 am

Dear Blackmagic Community,
I'm currently developing SMPTE 2110 output functionality using the DeckLink IP/SDI HD device, with a use case where I receive IP streams over the network, decode them, and output SDI and 2110 signals through the device. When connecting the 2110 IP signal to a Mini BiDirect 12G for conversion to SDI and monitoring, I encountered an issue: when receiving an 8-bit video stream(h264/h265), the monitor displays only audio without video, while a 10-bit stream works normally for both audio and video.

Using the demo program DeviceList, I checked the device information and noticed that the Ethernet Output supports both 8-bit and 10-bit video formats. This leads to my question: Does the Mini BiDirect 12G only support 10-bit video?

To resolve this, do I need to uniformly convert 8-bit video to 10-bit before outputting via 2110?

I can't speak for that particular converter, but I have found that for the older 3x3g converter that I think it was the 9.0.2 firmware that broke support for receiving 8bit yuv. Prior to that firmware it was able to receive and output it.
So I suspect you are seeing the same bug, and that this bug likely affects all of their converters.

I did report this to blackmagic in August 2024, and after pushing for a status update they brushed it off saying "It has been received and passed on for consideration", so as it is still broken I guess that supporting 8bit yuv is not deemed important.

This is particularly problematic for me (and I assume many others) as a lot of software using the decklinks will do so in a way that the decklink will convert to 8bit yuv. Which makes the output from many bits of software (through decklinks) incompatible with the rest of the blackmagic 2110 ecosystem

Thank you, this issue is also confusing for me. According to the SMPTE 2110 standard, I understand that both 8-bit and 10-bit should be supported—after all, 8-bit hasn't been completely replaced by 10-bit yet.
