Decklink Duo 2 CRASHING Windows 11 Pro

PostTue May 23, 2023 12:25 pm

I have a new Windows 11 Pro PC, with all of the Windows Updates applied, and no other new hardware or software installed on a “Brand New”, “Just out of the box PC”. When I install a Decklink Duo2 PCI card and load the most current Desktop Video 12.4.2 software, Windows Crashes with Bugcheck Errors. When I “Uninstall” the Desktop Video 12.4.2 software the “Bugcheck Errors Stop”.

Upon Analyzing the Windows Memory.dmp file, the results show:
1. Bug Check error 0x133
2. Unable to load BlackmagicIO.sys
3. Identifying BlackmagicIO.sys having an unknown function (BlackmagicIO!unknown)

The results of WinDbg analysis below, showing just lines containing text “Blackmagic”
Note: Full Memory.dmp and or WinDbg analysis is available upon request.

I’ve been working with Blackmagic (408) 954-0500 support for over 3 weeks and they are out of suggestions on what to do. I need someone in Blackmagic Developer Support to help fix this problem!

Has Blackmagic certified the Desktop Video 12.4.2 software to work on Windows 11 Pro?

!!!!!HELP!!!!!

Hello Doug,

I just bought new Decklink 8K and I am also experiencing stability issues. I haven't tried to look at the memory dump yet but I have a feeling that the latest Desktop Video 12.4.2 has some issues on Windows 11.

My setup is brand new with ASUS PROART Z790-CREATOR, which should have more than enough PCIe lanes and everything. PC works perfect without Decklink inside it. When I put the card in I start to experience random BSOD, sometimes machine has even trouble booting and goes through 3 blue screens before it launches correctly. From what i observed crashes often happen when application like Skype, Teams, Discord launch. My theory is that these apps check for connected audio/video interfaces and when they touch BMD driver it crashes the whole system. When it does work tho... it works just fine with no issues. I even put the card into much older machine with Win10 and there are no issues what so ever with same 12. 4. 2 driver.

I don't really like wasting whole day and reinstall this new PC to Windows 10 just to test BMD the driver. This is something manufacturer should do. Or at least clearly state if the driver is tested and certified for Windows 11.

I will do more testing and play around with other cards I have, maybe i will try older driver as well. But there is just as much time i have available to play around with this.

Jeff,

I found a consistent triggering event in the Windows Event log that precedes the DeckLink BSOD. By Tuesday I will post the event observations so BM System Developers can weight on fixing the BM Software.

Other people, including myself are having this same issue:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=175270

So far USA support has been pretty ambivalent about it and hasn't offered any fixes, other than suggesting rolling back the driver - which i did to 12.2.2 and still continued to have the same issue.

It's clearly an issue that needs to be addressed by them.

PROBLEM
Decklink Duo 2 Hardware and Software Crashes Windows 11.

OBSERVATIONS
1 - With Just Decklink Software – No Crash
2 - With Just Decklink PCI Hardware – No Crash
3 - With Both Decklink Software & Hardware – Crash
4 - With Desktop Video V12.4.2 and #3 configuration – Crash
5 - With Desktop Video V12.2.2 and #3 configuration – Crash
6 - Windows Event Log Error from the Memory.DMP file.
Unable to load image \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\BlackmagicIO.sys, Win32 error 0n2 Value: 0x133_ISR_BlackmagicIO!unknown_function
SYMBOL_NAME: BlackmagicIO+51e1f
MODULE_NAME: BlackmagicIO
IMAGE_NAME: BlackmagicIO.sys
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x133_ISR_BlackmagicIO!unknown_function

TRIGGERING EVENT
1 - Just Prior to the Windows Bugcheck 0x133 Crash, the same Event Error occurs.
2 - Network Adapter - Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (17) I219-LM Network link is “Disconnected” with a Windows Warning for e1dexpress Event ID27
3 - This Error with the Intel(R) Ethernet Driver correlates directly with the Bugcheck 0x133 error associated with BlackmagicIO.sys.

DRIVER UPDATE - Test Observations
Windows installed Intel driver - e1dexpress - Windows Immediate Crash
Alternate Intel Driver - e1i68x64.sys 6/24/21 v12.19.1.32 - Works for 24-36 hours then Windows Crash
Alternate Intel Driver - e1d.sys 1/30/22 V12.19.2.45 - Windows Immediate Crash
Alternate Intel Driver - e1d.sys 11/3/22 V12.19.2.50 – NO Crash - So far working over 36 hours

NEXT STEPS - BM System Developer Support
Assuming the Observations, Triggering Event and Remediation steps to eliminate the Windows Crash associated with Decklink Duo 2 provide valuable insight into the source of the Crash.

What steps can BM System Developers take to monitor for the Ethernet Connection (17) I219-LM Network link Disconnect occurrence and prevent BlackmagicIO.sys from Crashing Windows?

Note: Windows Memory .DMP and Driver Update detailed information can be provided upon request.

Shafiro,

Since 30-May-2023, there was one BSOD relating to MMCSS.SYS. However, the Memory.DMP file analysis did not point to BM as the source of the problem in this instance. Other than this one BSOD occurrence, the Windows 11 system has been error free for over 4 days with the Intel e1d.sys 11/3/22 V12.19.2.50 Driver Update installed.

No intel ethernet on a computer I'm testing with (Marvel 3.1.3.0 - 10GB) - and same issue. On other systems, downgrading to Windows 10 has helped to stable running, but Windows 11 and BMD driver has an issue. I thought it might be a Windows 11 22H2 issue, but the latest computer I'm testing with doesn't have it installed.

Re: Decklink Duo 2 CRASHING Windows 11 Pro

I have appeared to fix the problem, without BlackMagic support. From my previous post there was a triggering event that occur just before Blackmagic Crashed Windows 11.

In my case the triggering event was a Driver for an Intel(R)Network Adapter (See Triggering Event text below). As each of us has a different make and model computer, your Triggering Event for Blackmagic to crash windows will probably be a different device. In any case, see if the Memory.dmp file has the same non-Blackmagic error occurring just before the BSOD. Analyze that error, and see what device is associated with the error. Try and get an updated or different version of the Driver software for that device until the BSOD stops like it did in my case.

Why Blackmagic can’t monitor for, trap these error conditions and gracefully manage the error in their software without crashing Windows 11 is a mystery to me.

dear Doug F,
Сan you record a video instruction using your own example, how can this be found? I already have my dmp file. I don't understand anything about this process right now. Please.

Same issue on a new build Asus Z790-F, RTX3060, 13700K WIN11 Home. Never had a problem on previous build with WIN 10 and MSI mobo. Tons of MSCSS.SYS and NTOSKRNL errors in the logs with DRIVER WATCHDOG sand IRQL NOT LESS… BSODS. Lots of random times and sometimes comes back up into a boot loop on restart. Card works fine. Until it doesn’t. PLEASE help! This is a show stopper for us and it obviously a Blackmagic driver issue and problems cease when card is removed. Thank you and let me know if I can help with data!

Unfortunately, this solution does not work in our case. We have been removing drivers one by one, completely deleting them from the system. Additionally, we disabled the devices one by one from the BIOS. However the BSOD is there after each reboot, as long as the Decklink is installed, just with a different warning displayed in the event viewer.

Any other news here? I had an Intensity Pro 4k that I swapped in temporarily without reinstalling drivers and all is well. So it’s not the driver itself I guess? Something about how the decklink card interacts. Really need to find a solution. :(

Just curious... is this only happening to people with ASUS motherboards? We have three identical builds -- except one doesn't have a Blackmagic card in them -- and the two with BM devices in them BSOD after being used.

A very simple way to duplicate this bug is:
- Install card and driver
- Use card in an app (in our case, Resolume Arena or ProPresenter)
- Reboot the computer and watch it bootloop a few times
- Check event viewer and the dump files and see that the kernel crashes

A simple way to resolve the issue is by removing the BM card.

Driver itself won't do anything. The issue is 100% driver not being optimized/tested for Windows 11. I worked as software engineer on Windows platform for many years (sadly before Win11 came out). And basically... Drivers are pieces of software that run in Kernel space meaning they share memory with OS itself. So when driver crashes it usually takes down entire OS down with him, which triggers BSOD.

BMD driver works just fine on Windows 10. I reinstalled the same machine and tested it. So either Microsoft changed something in its API for Windows 11 or guidelines how to write backwards-forewards compatible drivers were not followed, this may have been do on purpose for what ever reason.
Drivers can be quite complicated pieces of software and I am not gonna pretend to know details what is going on.

Windows 11 is here for almost two years now and it is here to stay. So BMD has to fix this issue eventually. But for time being if you need it to work, I would suggest just move back to Windows 10. That's what I did.

A new version of Desktop Video 12.5 has been released today
But I have already installed Windows 10 and there are no previous problems here.
Tell me how DUO 2 behaves now in Win11. Are there BSOD with version 12.5 of Desktop Video driver?

Hi Denis,

Unfortunately, the 12.5 update does not include a fix for the BSOD issue on Win11.
Our engineers are still working on this.

As a workaround, you can disable the AVStream device for the card in Device Manager, this is the driver used by WDM Filters, available via DirectShow. Please be aware that this will prevent DirectShow apps from working properly, but 3rd Party apps developed with the Desktop Video SDK should be unaffected.

Brendan,

As the creator of this Post and dealing with this problem since the end of April, I am grateful that BM Software Development appears to have a solution to the Windows 11 BSOD problem. Since installing Desktop Video 12.5.1 Windows 11 appears to be stable.

As an interested Teckie, could you provide a summary level explanation of what the problem was and what BM did to fix it?

Regards,
Dfloyd02

Hi Doug (Dfloyd02),

A problem was fixed in the AVStream driver related to how the code handles events that were triggered by minor changes when Windows 11 sends events.

The AVStream driver was changed to be resilient to changes in event timing as seen in Windows 11.

Kind regards,
Brendan

howdy,

not to revive a dead thread but I'm still having issues with a BM Duo 2 card and Windows 11.

I have to preface this by saying that it was working at a certain point, although not 100% correctly, and then all of a sudden no matter what config of my PCI cards I use, the minute I use the card in vMix it BSODs.

I'm not sure what I can do if anything to fix it, short of building another rig or downgrading to Windows 10.

Are you using the latest driver? Just few posts up they are claiming it's fixed now.

I am thinking about giving it a try.

Just quick follow up,

I got no more BSODs on Windows 11 Pro with Desktop Video 12.5.1. My Decklink 8K has been running stable for almost a week now.

So it seems to be resolved indeed.

Good job.
