Blackmagic Design today announced the immediate availability of HyperDeck software update 3.6, a new update to its revolutionary solid state disk (SSD) recorder which adds support for Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) into HyperDeck Shuttle 2, plus new closed caption support for all HyperDeck models. At only US$345, the HyperDeck Shuttle 2 with the new ProRes compression feature significantly reduces the size of uncompressed HD video files while preserving full frame 10-bit 4:2:2 quality, allowing customers to record up to six times longer.

Read more, here!

To access the download, head over to our Support page, select your OS, HyperDeck, and your HyperDeck model.

Hi Christine, what is the estimated record time when running of the battery?

A few days ago I installed the new codec and set the HD to use it the setup util.

The file sizes are about the same as the Avid codec.

Christine's announcement states that the file sizes should be dramatically reduced.

Am I missing something here?

The Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) has a similar bitrate to the Avid DNxHD 220x support we currently have in the HyperDeck Shuttle 2 so you will not see changes in file sizes. The file size comparison is made in relation to Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.

Do the empty channels of audio take up space on ProRes HQ? Any chance of feature to turn them off or at least select which channels, deleting them all before and edit is a real pain.

What are the chances of the Hyperdeck doing pulldown as it records (the same way that the Ninja 2 does it)? Is this a firmware enabled function?

Most likely a firmware tweak but we will have to check it out and see what's possible.

And what is the chances that Hyperdeck Shuttle2 becomes able to record 1080p60 or 1080i60 ?

Your answer will tell me if I must sell it or if I must keep it...

Like Marc, I would really like to see internal pulldown (both add/remove) added as a feature, as well as HDMI start/stop triggers. Both Sony and Canon embed timecode into HDMI so it seems a Rec/Run signal trigger over HDMI could be implemented.

3:2 & 2:2 pulldown removal is a necessity.

Do you have ANY idea how busy the software team is @ BMD??

For the hyperdeck recorders they first have to fix On screen display info, timecode, Rec time left and Format drive. ;)

What would be fantastic is if the Hyperdeck had a GUI for control. If it had the ability to be used with a playlist I would put one in every rack I have for Live production. BM is really missing the boat on this.

I tried ProRes with my Shuttle II and did not like it,
or was it that it did not like me?

QuickTime would not play my recordings on my PC.
Error maessages suggest nearly a dozen software sources.
None of them worked.

VLC would play them but the Video was in slow motion
even though I had my camera set for 1080P at 30fps.

Power Director, Premier, nor AVID could import them.

Finally I went to AVID and downloaded their free codecs pac.
This fixed everything exect the Video synch.

I then downloaded free MediaInfo and found out that
ProRes was producing a reduced size recording at 60fps.

I then switched HyperDeck Shuttle II to DNxHD 220 and everything works as it should.
I now get what I set my HDSLR camera for and I get what I see on my external monitor.

Regarding pulldown here is explained how it works with the competitor:
