Amazon has 4Tb SSD for $26

PostTue Aug 06, 2024 2:56 am

I took a chance on buying one of these 4Tb SSD drive which costs about $26 plus tax and a hefty shipping cost. In total, it was far less than any 4Tb SSD that I have purchased this year. It took a while to arrive and finally did last Saturday.

I just formatted it on the Mac and did the speed test, and also on Windows. I’m not sure if it will crap out and if it does, I hope within the next 30 days while I still can return it to Amazon. I just want to use it as temporary storage for proxies while editing so I don’t intent to keep long term data. I’m skeptical at the moment when it comes to reliability, but from a functional standpoint, it’s doing what it’s supposed to do and the whole 4Tb of it. :)

Would you buy one or a few? Cost wise, you can get 10 for the price of 1 Samsung 4TB SSD. Has anyone tried them out too? Here’s the speed test of the drive connected via an SSD reader.

Is that a serious question or are you joking?

No, I would never buy this. Clearly, the Samsung trademark has been photoshopped out. And obviously, the seller engaged in copyright violation by using Samsung imagery.

But, there is a sucker born every minute.......

My curiosity got the best of me… so I did bought one. It did not have the EVO logo as in the photoshop picture. It had no labels but it worked. For how long, I don’t know but I have 28 days left to return it and get my money back from Amazon. This reminded me of the Biwin CFast 2 Cards that were $80 for a 256Gb size. There was several threads on the BMCUser forum and several of the forum participants did order it, yours truly too. I still have them and they did worked. I would not use them on a paid shoot but they still worked, not as fast but enough to shot CinemaDNG or Prores in FHD up to 50 fps before it starts to drop frames.

As to the copyright violation, that’s for Amazon and Samsung to deal with them. Somehow, they’re still selling on Amazon. Will I buy another one, definitely not. However, it is a real product that you can buy on Amazon so it’s not just for suckers.

If you haven't solved the issue yet, try looking up a video tutorial or the latest manual for guidance. Also, posting detailed questions here can be super helpful—there are a lot of knowledgeable folks in this forum who might have just the right insight. Good luck!

Be aware that these devices usually fake their capacity. The best way to test them is to fill the drive with data you can verify. Try reading the start of the drive after you have filled it.

My guess is you will have lost your data.

I retuned the 1 piece back to Amazon. It took a week for them to credit the return but that was it for me. It was good when I just tried it but I didn’t really do much testing after Charles and Cary posted their concerns, and returned it early.
