[Solved] Help for purchasing lens for BM Micro Camera 4k G2

PostTue Jan 14, 2025 4:54 pm

A Client of me bought the BM Micro Camera 4k G2 and following the suggestion of a BM vendor in UK, he bought a MFT 45mm lens.

That camera had to be used as high quality webcam, connected to the Elgato Camlink 4k suggested by some other user here in this forum. His help was very valid. It works.

The issue is that with such lens, at the distance of about 1 arm of distance (80cm/1mt), obtained a close-up As here below. Instead he need an opened picture like the second picture.

Which MFT lens would you suggest that doesn't cost a leg?
Or als an adapter to any lens as Canon and then the correct lens?
Any suggestion please?

NOTE: he sent the 45mm lens back to the vendor

Help for purchasing lens for BM Micro Camera 4k G2

Sounds like a field of view calculator would be helpful. There are plenty on the web. And that something in the 12-25mm range would suit you.

And of course you can add to that many other lenses by using a mount adapter. Many people use Canon EF lenses as they’re plentiful and now relatively inexpensive.

If you want more specific suggestions it’d be good to know a bit more about your situation. Do you want a cheap fixed lens for this one use case? Or a more versatile lens possibly with stabilization for handheld work?

Yes the adapter was my n.1 suggestion to him.

What I would need for him, for his situation is a cheap fixed lens quite wide (as you noticed) so that he can use the camera with the same aperture he has now with the cheapo webcam.

For the time being is more than sufficient.

That camera gives you a 90 degree fov.
An equivalent fov on the bmpcc4k could be had with about a 9.5mm lens.

Don’t get the 7mm as it’s a fisheye. But the 12mm would probably do you if you can back up a bit or can afford a bit of a crop with the current webcam.

If you’re using a speed booster aka focal reducer you can get away with a 13-14 mm lens.

To visually verify that a certain focal length and camera combination will be suitable, use a director's viewfinder app, like Cadrage Director's Viewfinder.

If 12mm on an MFT camera seems good to you, Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f/2 is a great lens for this task.

Can this lens be good? Perhaps is larger but I can crop in post, while if it is too close, I can't enlarge in post. What do you think?

Did you Google the lens? Here’s a top hit:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4552699

As I said earlier, you need about a 9.5mm to equal the field of view that you’re getting with the webcam. So a 14 will be much less and probably not suitable.

Well I've read 5.6mm here the title "MEITU X14-42 f/3.5-5.6mm Asph OIS Lens Micro 4/3 MFT" or am I wrong?

I don't find cheap lenses with that focal :-/

It's the other way around, the longer the focal length (higher number) the more zoomed in it will be. Ah, it was a misunderstanding, you mean larger as in a larger field of view, but as noted below it's 14mm not 5.6mm.

Do yourself a favor and take the guesswork out of it and try a director's viewfinder app like the one I linked to. This will simulate how much of the image you will see on a certain lens/camera, using only a smartphone. The best one is Cadrage but I'm sure you can find free alternatives.

It's the ebay listing that's fooling you. 5.6 refers to the aperture and isn't usually specified in "mm" as it's a ratio.

I followed your suggestion and I found a BMD director's viewfinder where there is the BMD micro camera. adn indeed I should go with a 9-9.5 focal length. That issue is that I can't find one cheap and which is not a fish eye.

Yes those aren't cheap. If you're ok with a manual focus lens, maybe check out the Laowa 10mm f/2 lens.

Yes it should be manual, because it's needed for a talking head. So once in focus, no one will touch it any longer.

I found the lens you suggested in FNAC here in Belgium. I informed my Client and i asked him to bring the camera, the power supply and the HDMI cable, to test the lens upfront the purchase. It is in special offers in these days.
