Ideas for Video Sources

PostThu Jul 03, 2025 5:41 pm

This is my first post on the Blackmagic Forum so I'm kind of getting my feet wet. The topic, however, is one that I have pondered extensively so I wanted to share it with others and solicit input on your ideas as well. I did a search earlier today and did not find previous posts on this topic.

I started learning Resolve in February, 2025. After working through Blackmagic's tutorial for version 19 and one from another provider, I have developed a basic understanding of the product and have worked to enhance my workflow when editing videos. My problem, however, is finding videos to edit.

When my daughter was growing up, I spent countless hours on the sidelines at her games for many years videoing every single game. The hundreds of MiniDV tapes I accumulated provided plenty of material for editing (in several versions of Sony Vegas). The soccer games provided an "automatic" source of video material. Those days are long gone, but I still have a voracious interest in video editing.

One idea I followed through on was taping family "interviews" as a source for video material. I did this with both parents (on several occasions) as well as one other family member. Now that they have passed, I have an invaluable record of them talking about "the good old days" that I can watch whenever I wish. I have no idea how many others have done this, but if you haven't, consider doing it while your loved ones are still alive.

Another idea I came up with was taking all the family photos that I scanned from 35mm slides years ago (about 1500 of them) and creating video slideshows in Resolve. I did this by pulling each group of pictures into Resolve and doing a screen recording with QuickTime, coupled with another camera on me for the "headshot." After a short intro for each group of pictures, I reduced the size of the headshot to a picture-in-picture rectangle as I narrated the stories behind all of these pictures...dating back to the 1950s. Now my daughter will have a complete understanding of our family photos instead of just flipping through pictures years from now without knowing the stories behind them.

After completing the photo narration project recently and logging dozens of new projects in Resolve, I'm back to searching for source material for other video projects, so I wanted to ask for ideas from the huge following on this forum. Can you share your thoughts on ideas for video source material so I can continue expanding my interest in video editing? I have racked my brain after completing the photo editing project that occupied me for weeks but haven't come up with anything.

Perhaps this topic and request my seem a bit odd, but at least for the moment...I'm out of ideas. I will appreciate any suggestions I receive.

Thanks

There are a number of libraries available that provide stills and video for a fixed monthly or yearly membership fee. Have a look at these.
