This is a huge topic, so I have written a huge article, available at my new DaVinci Resolve resource hub.

Short story:

1. Buy a desktop computer for video, not a laptop.

2. Re-read point #1.

3. If you are still reading, ensure your laptop has a discrete GPU, 2 SSD drives, and 64 GB RAM (for 4K timelines).

4. When you realise the cost and availability of such a laptop, re-read point #1.

An editing laptop typically has the same components. This is close to $2K and meets and exceeds the requirement:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/ ... x2070.html

I have an older version I have edited on. You could spend as little as$699 at B&H and get something that would work, and you would have the $ left to max out the RAM and the solid state drives. It’s only an i5

Spending the 2K on just the computer does not an edit suite make. Add a 4K monitor, a mike/mixing board, there’s lots to buy.

Hope this helps. On a personal note, I use the basic 27” iMac with upgrades to RAM and hard drive. The computer alone is over your budget and I have not added the external RAIDS , you don’t need A RAID but Ryan to keep the drives in Thunderbolt 3, and use the NMVE version.

Good luck.

I also should tell you there is upgradability for atleast another SSD
