I'm sure this is a dumb question but I can't help but wonder as I assemble my purchase list for my setup.
Matte boxes. They're great for holding the large filters at the end. But those filters cost 2-3 times what the same brand's lens-mounted filters do plus they're just big. I'm assuming that it's in large part because it's....a large part.
So then why don't matte boxes use a smaller filter closer to the lens? A couple reasons I could think of that may be equally dumb answers:
- More distance could keep small scratches / dust out of focus and less visible
- The filter makers would rather bring in 2-3 times as much money
- It could cause vignetting (of course making them just a bit bigger should solve that)
- They look cooler out front
What does it all meeeean?
