Would you recommend an internal RAID controller card?

PostTue Nov 09, 2021 10:31 am

Hi. I wanted to ask a quick question.

In our office we use a few Mac and Windows based systems which use Thunderbolt connection with G-Raid systems. We also have 2 high end systems but with no thunderbolt support so I was considering to buy an internal RAID controller so that I could internally setup a RAID 0 or 5 system.

Does anyone else use an internal setup like that? Would you suggest me doing it too ? If yes what make/model cards (and hard drives ) would you suggest ?

Thanks.
Have a nice day.

I wouldn't go with hardware RAID unless you were really trying to optimize for multithreaded performance.

If you're just trying to scale up internal bulk (or SSD) storage, try Storage Spaces, at least on Windows. It works with any drive controller (even NVMe), *and* the arrays are portable across any modern Windows system. Just be prepared to learn a little Powershell if you really want to get the spaces created in a specific way.

I'm not well versed on OSX these days, so I can't give much advice there.
