What is my title? Credits...

PostFri Oct 25, 2024 9:53 pm

Hello. I am doing my first big documentary film with my boss. He called me and said that he should be considered an editor as well in the credits. I am not sure what the industry terms are, so I'll set out some of the tasks we each did.

My boss: Selected the content to be used, gave direction, create the organization of the timeline, selected the music and sound effects, and asked for video edits to be done. All of this was done over call or spreadsheets and emails, no actual touching of video or audio editing software

Myself: Actually creating the video project, most of the creativity when it came to the actual editing and animations, audio editing, video editing, renders.

What should we each be listed as? Currently he's listed as the Director, Executive Producer, Writer. I'm listed as the "Editor" currently in the credits and that's it.

You'll need to have a written document to refer to and have it handy when you settle that with your boss.

Here is a good one:

https://www.internationalstuntacademy.c ... -does-what

Key Roles in Movie Credits, In summary:

Producer: Oversees the entire production, from financing and hiring key staff to guiding the project through post-production and marketing.

Director: The creative lead who makes all key visual and narrative decisions. Directs actors, works with the crew, and shapes the film's final look.

Screenwriter: Writes the script, including dialogue, characters, and plot.

Editor: Assembles raw footage into a coherent story, working closely with the director to ensure pacing, continuity, and the overall feel of the film.

Cinematographer (Director of Photography): Manages the camera and lighting crews to achieve the director's vision for each shot.

Production Designer: Creates the visual concept of the film, including sets, locations, and props, to make the story’s world believable.

Sound Designer: Crafts the auditory elements of the film, from dialogue and sound effects to ambient noises and musical scores.

Costume Designer: Designs and oversees the creation of costumes to ensure they reflect the characters' personalities and the story's setting.

Makeup Artist: Enhances or alters actors' appearances through makeup and prosthetics.

Visual Effects Supervisor: Manages the team that creates visual effects, ensuring they integrate seamlessly with live-action footage.

cheers,
Dorin

It sounds like you're doing some great work on your first big doc! Since your boss is more about the overall vision and managing things rather than actually editing, keeping him as Director or Executive Producer seems spot on. For your title, “Editor” works, but if you want to showcase your creative side more, maybe consider “Lead Editor” or “Video Editor.” It’s all about making sure your contributions shine too! Just have a chat with your boss about the titles to make sure you’re both on the same page.

If you are expecting any "legal issues", you might want to go with Innocent Bystander.

Good luck with your project!

As I read what you wrote, it sounds like your engagements are in the “Post Production” effort and not the “Production” (a.k.a the filming of) effort. Therefore if that is the case, then your boss should be listed as Post Production Supervisor and you as the Editor.

Rule of thumb.

DO NOT PISS OFF THE PERSON THAT EMPLOYS YOU!

If this is going to create friction between you, let it go and live to fight another day.
Life is too short.
