New, looking for general advise

PostFri Jun 21, 2019 5:18 am

Hello,
I started a VHS/8mm project to revive my family's home movies. Being a complete noobie I am wondering what order I should do things in. My main focus is restoring the footage as best as possible with software then "super-sampling" (not sure if that is the correct term) to expand the final footage to fit a 1080p television.

For example(in what order?):
- Cut/edit raw footage.
- Color correct/ add filters to enhance old/poor media.
- Change 24FPS original footage to 30 or 60 FPS. (do/don't - from the start/after final real is edited)
- Edit audio (separately clip by clip or all at once when I have a final timeline?)

What tools will make my life easier that worked for you?
Is there any way to batch edit film clips by setting presets? (I have a lot of video clips 100+)
Any other advise you can give me starting out would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your thoughts and time.
best regards,
Jerrad

The first question might be into what video format have you digitised the VHS/8mm footage?

First, 8mm = Video8 video or film ?

For VHS you should not choose a too old VHS VCR, it should have at least have build in TBC stabilization, a BMD capture device needs a very clean video signal.
Out of experience i can tell you the Panasonic DMR ES35V is a very good option, it delivers a good video signal from it's VHS deck, and has also a component video output on top of that, which also outputs a very stable YUV video signal, which is good enough for the Intensity Shuttle (TB2) i use it with.

I have a VHS transfer guide on this forum, it will answer some of your questions.

Did you ever find out the right workflow to restore your video?
How did the project go?

I'm trying to do the same thing.
Any input would be appreciated.

This is what I found out and this what I need to know?

I am preparing to restore my S VHS footage and edit in Resolve.

First, would using the color space transform when I get to color correction and grading after denoising and upscaling, which camera selection would I use for the input color space. I've read that rec 601 would be good for that type of footage. Unfortunately, it seems resolve doesn't include that option. Why not?
Would Rec 709 be suitable, or is this not even the best way to go about a reaching my goal?

I have latest studio version 19 64 gigs of ram nvidia 3060
12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700 2.10 GHz Windows 11

also have more info about my footage. I used a canopus converter box so I'm dealing with
The Canopus ADVC-110 outputs video in the DV format with the following specifications:
• Resolution: 720 x 480 pixels (NTSC) or 720 x 576 pixels (PAL)
• Frame Rate: 29.97 fps (NTSC) or 25 fps (PAL)
• Bitrate: Approximately 25 Mbps
• Audio: 16-bit, 48 kHz stereo

Below is what the footage looks like. The master that I will be restoring is two gen better than this. I also have indoor footage in dark nightclubs.
Would I edit first and export to Topaz in AVI (the same format at the same res)
Or if I don't use Topaz and do everything in resolve, would I upscale and color grade before or after editing?
I assume you would edit first if you are using Topaz so you don't have to upscale ALL the raw footage. Only what you need.
This is a workflow I got from Chatgpt does this look correct? Is Topaz AI worth it or do you think I can work with the tools in divinci. I think the ultra denoiser is pretty good, but the superscaler doesn't do much with this footage. I read some people think Topaz is the bomb, and others not so much.
I just want to upscale to 1080P unless going higher would be better for doing youtube shorts.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Step 1: Initial Restoration with Topaz Video AI
1. Import Footage: Open Topaz Video AI and import your S-VHS footage.
2. Select Model: Choose the appropriate AI model for your needs (e.g., upscaling, denoising, stabilization).
3. Adjust Settings: Fine-tune the settings to get the best results. You might need to experiment with different settings to see what works best for your footage.
4. Process Video: Run the video through Topaz Video AI to apply the enhancements.
5. Export: Export the enhanced video in a high-quality format (e.g., ProRes, DNxHR) to maintain the best possible quality for further editing.

DV files from the AVDC110 give large files with slow storage you could get dropped files...
Better avoid consumer capture/converter devices IRE can't be set, the AVDC110 can be set to 7.5 for NTSC,
or 0.0 for PAL
ProRes422LT is good enough for PAL/NTSC is my experience with a BMD converter > VideoAssist (using SDI) .
Storing to SD card, AI (rendering) works fast enough on your pc/MAC ?

How long does it take to render a 10 seconds long video?

PostSun Sep 15, 2024 9:09 am

How long does it take to render a 10 seconds long video using DaVinci Resolve 19.0.1.0006? My updated DV 10.0.1.0006 says 15:45:02 are required. It is not normal, but I don't know how to solve the problem. Is there anyone who knows where to download previous versions, like DaVinci Resolve 18.5? Thanks in advance.
