Can I open projects from network drive?

PostThu Nov 07, 2024 4:37 pm

I wanted to confirm before purchasing Resolve, that I can store our projects on a local network drive and be able to open from one of two computers I have available (without having to move any files). Thanks for any and all info...

How is that setup?

Yes and no.

You should read the manual, chapters relating to collaboration and the DaVinci Resolve project server,

All DaVinci Resolve projects live inside a database and that database operates in the DaVinci Resolve project server, so to collaborate in real time, the server is connected to the two systems.

You can use common storage for the media.

You may find this FAQ useful.

The project server (download link) can be used to install a safe multi-user network based project library (based off PostgreSQL) to support simultaneous collaboration. It will be available on your LAN subnet, will not need internet access unless you need to login to internet services or to validate licensing. But it is not file or folder based.

DaVinci Resolve by default starts you off with a single-user disk-based local project library and you can create more. Accessing the project files with more than 1 software simultaneously - even with Dropbox etc for syncing - puts it in risk of corruption. We discourage network folders - even ignoring the network latency and implications on Live save, the ability to simultaneously access (and write and overwrite) a project file risks file corruption.

The third way to access is the Blackmagic Cloud project library - which offers both portability (allowing you to work from your home or head to a coffee shop) and remote multi-user collaboration (like a network project library).

This is helpful. I should be more specific though. My intention is not to ever collaborate, share, or simultaneously edit a project. Instead, if I'm away, my coworker can open a project from her desk. However, this begs the question, is it possible that her and I could be using DaVinci at the same time (on different projects)?

If you don’t want to share/collaborate with a shared project library, you can always export your project when u leave the office and your co worker can import.

Your media is separate to the project and I’m assuming you both have access to your it.

You each need the studio version if you’re using studio features
