Janky Forum

PostSat Dec 07, 2024 1:17 am

My first impression of this forum, is that it's really janky and out dated.

Profile pix have to be 6kb. I take a 90x90px image and compress it down to 45% and it's under 6kb in Photoshop Export, but the moment I save to desktop, the file-size jumps up to 20kb. This is like 2025 almost and we're still working with 6kb images?

The whole idea of using real names is to build a more trustworthy community, and yet the system actively makes it difficult to upload a profile image. Sure you might no some clever workaround, but that's not the point. Take a look at the threads, how many users have profile pix. Virtually none, unless they joined back in 2013. This is supposedly a forum for photographers.

The activation key system doesn't work.

There is no dedicated forums for specific products.

The whole moderation thing sucks. I've spent several thousand on BlackMagic products and I can't even post a question about a critical issue that I'm having, without waiting several days for a moderator to approve the post. That feels like a slap in the face, for a paying customer.

Is there a BlackMagic Slack channel, or something more modern?

No…. And I hope NOT! Slack channel sucks and this forum is just fine the way it is. It serves the purpose for those who serve others forum members here… and we too are mostly paying BMD customers.

Well I posted a support question about connecting a Pyxis to a Video Assist a few days ago, and that still hasn't been approved.

It took me about several months to get an account activated, after numerous failed attempts.

I also don't get any kind of email notifications from the forum. Not when my posts are approved. Not when someone replies. They aren't going into junk. I've checked that already.

If your profile pic changes size when you save it then that is down to you and has nothing to do with the forum but how you are using your software. You're more likely to find that users can't be bothered to post an avatar rather than any difficulty with creating and uploading one.

This not a forum for photographers. It is for users, both amateur and professional, of Blackmagic video products.
I've never had a problem with the Activation Key for Resolve Studio.
In the Board index each heading tells you what is covered in that section.
The initial moderation system for new users is to counteract spam on the forum.

Remember, this is a user forum for users to help users, though Blackmagic staff do read and help with problems, their names appearing in blue when they post, and not a direct link to Blackmagic Design. Whether you spent nothing or thousands on equipment holds no weight here.

I agree - the 6kb limit is a bit tight. On the other hand this lightweightness allows the forum to be loaded fast - even when you are out in the wild on a bad connection.

When you export from Photoshop, make sure it doesn't added a color profile as this will increase the file size by a few kb. That should do the trick.

You mean getting your user activated? Can't say anything about that. But I had issues with my registration to the Blackmagic Cloud as I never received the emails with the activation link. After a few months that suddenly worked.

There are some dedicated forums, but not all products have their own one.
To be honest, I think it would be too cluttered - just take the DJI forum as an example.

As a long time user here (almost 12 years) I and many others do our best to help other users out with our knowledge. We do that in our spare time for free, sometimes dedicating many hours into explaining, educating and trying to find workarounds, causes for problems.

Having many specific subforums would mean a lot of additional time for us to check for user posts.
Now I regularly jump into the "Cinematography", "Getting Started" and "Davinci Resolve" categories. I have a look over new postings, read them and write an answer if I know I can help. Maybe jump a page back, too.
Then I check "View your posts" to see if one of my answers got an answer.

If the forum gets more cluttered, I would have to check many more sub forums.

Yes, I agree that this should get addressed as this can be really annoying, especially when you got a burning question. I think they set it up that way to prevent broader spam attacks - the forum has been quite spared of those so far.

Please no Slack or any other closed system. The greatness of this forum is that it is open to the public, it gets search indexed and it holds the combined knowledge of many, many people for over a decade.

For almost any issue you can google, duckduck, ecosia, bing, and the search results will bring you to a dedicated thread over here.
Facebook groups, Slack, Teams are all closed systems, keeping the knowledge hidden and gone forever.
They are the Black Holes of the information age.

This forum here might look old style, but it presents information straight to the point, with very little clutter and distractions. Try to enjoy it like a classy, aged wine.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

This forum has a strong community but could benefit from updates like easier profile image uploads and faster moderation. Happy New Years.

Also the Forum isn't optimized for mobile.

It doesn't scale the page components and content according to the reduced screen size of the device.

Also updating the Max Size for Profile images, would only take a couple of minutes.

None of your requests makes content better. The layout or lack thereof is just fine. It works for 98% of the forum users who benefit from the content. They don’t care for the responsive UI BS that can later be filled with junk ands and spammy stuff. If you like profiles, nice borders, ect., go to the BM Facebook group. I don’t use Facebook because it’s a janky social site. But those who like it are super welcome to leave and go there.

I agree, a larger profile image max file size seems reasonable.

Also I would love to have a larger font size!
It's quite difficult to read on this forum with the text being so tiny.

If you find the text too small you can always enlarge the view. ;)

Yeah that works up to a certain amount in the browser, but the way the CSS is applied on here, eventually as you zoom in further, it starts hiding part of the posts... you have to scroll left to right to see the whole sentences. And so it seems like a font size choice in user preferences might be nice. Certainly not a hill I would die on though. :D

Tapatalk is the right way to see forums on mobile.
If you are on mobile, you should use right app of mobile browsing and not a classic browser which had format problems of 90% of website (also with cms that are different from device, os, browser).

Forum can be zoomed in every browser with a simple zoom to have smaller or bigger font,

told that my 53 years old eyes (behind a monitor from 8 years old) see without big problems the standard font in Firefox, chrome and safari and edge. May be have you zoom out the browser?
