Davinci will not open

PostFri Mar 28, 2025 4:54 am

was using for a few weeks, then last week when rendering a file, it froze after it was at about 30% and closed, then it again rendered then closed. after that it would not open at all. I removed the program and re-downloaded it it, but still will not open. I have tried all the tricks that youtube has to offer.

I am not clear what to do, I read through the FAQ. I am just to provide my computer details which I did. there is not instructions on how to provide a link for google drive so I can post my diagnostic log archives.
here is a link:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... drive_link

I downloaded the most recent version, version 19.

You need to provide access to the google drive link so someone can take a look.

Can you also please let us know what GPU is in that computer?

If you installed the Control Panels when installing Resolve try removing it. Go to Control Panel/Programs and Features, click on DaVinci Resolve Control Panels and uninstall it. Now see if Resolve will open.

Same here.
I got my computer back from the repair shop and now after installing it on a new win11 laptop with rtx4070 etc all the bells and whistles, it won't get past loading plugins. I tried reinstalling versions 19.1-20, unplugging usbs, etc all the fixes you can imagine. Feeding logs into chatgpt, sending reports to Blackmagic.... (which I don't expect to hear back from, but would be nice). It used to work on v19 very well. What happened in the meantime? I deleted the control panel too, that didn' help. New drivers, Nvidia studio....

Anyone have any luck with fixing this? This started happening to me a week ago. Tried every fix I could find with zero success. I did a clean reinstall (lost all my projects in the process, but whatever) and still can't get it to work.

The only thing I haven't been able to do is deactivate my license before doing a reinstall- but if I can't open the software, I don't know how else to do it.

from other boards and content creators, this is a widespread problem that Divinci is not addressing. I have gone back to using other products. too bad, because their lack of response has lost me as a possible purchaser.

I tried a lot of things, looking for answers on YouTube and here: nothing helped.

It's good that I have a March system backup. I rolled back and everything worked.

Now I carefully install Windows, Nvidia and other updates)

It's not a widespread problem.
But most user here reporting this issue do not bother to read the FAQs or give any meaningful details (like specific windows and driver versions - "all latest" means nothing) - so one would have to have the ability to do mind-reading to even guess what is going on there.
Also - your google drive link still doesn't work.

A few things known to cause troubles:

* active VPN <- deactivate or put Resolve into list of exceptions
* hardware not meeting the minimum requirements
* installed drivers for BMD control panels, but no panel hardware <- uninstall drivers
* problematic USB devices like webcams or cheap USB mics
* Laptop with dedicated and integrated GPU using the integrated one as main GPU <- force dedicated GPU for Resolve
* after replacing GPU not having done a clean install of the drivers
* certain GPU driver versions can cause an issue (replace with older or newer drivers)
* multi monitor setup connected to different GPUs <- all monitors need to use the same GPU
* third party OFX plugins like topaz

The reason turned out to be Topaz Video AI 6.2.
When installing this software, refuse OpenFX Plugins.

That may very well pinpoint my own problem!!!

I suppose I'll try uninstalling Topaz first, then starting Resolve again, then reinstalling Topaz but following your tip about the plug-ins.

(I don't have time tonight, but I'll see if this works tomorrow.)

Thanks for the tip!!! :)

Success! :)

It was definitely Topaz, and not Resolve. This really makes me happy, as I have had excellent experiences with Resolve, and had little desire to go crawling back to Adobe, may they rot in hell.

Again, thank you SnegOM for your input! :)

This might be a bit of a dumb question at this point, but have you tried restarting your computer?

Sorry, the only reason I ask is that the logs you posted a month ago seem to show the app being started repeatedly but going nowhere, so it makes me wonder if there is already a zombie process running. Manually killing the process can help, but the easiest way is to restart the computer. And by restart, I mean Start->Power->Restart.

If you have restarted, can you try doing it one more time and then running davinci once and only once and then regrabbing and reposting the info on google drive? This will make it easier for other users like me to see what's happening. The devs might have other tools for figuring out what's going on that wouldn't require all this, but I'm not sure.

@Grant: Just to note, going forward, if you have a Resolve specific issue, post it in the Resolve forum and it's more likely someone Resolve specific (me) will see it. I don't monitor this forum.

Your config.dat file is bad. You have a good backup copy.

Open File Explorer Options, and on the View tab, enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

Also unselect "Hide extensions for known file types".

Then in File Explorer, navigate to this folder:

C:\Users\lorne\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Preferences

Delete the config.dat file.

Right click the config.dat.bak file and select Copy.

Now select the Paste menu. That should make a new file called config.dat - Copy.bak

Rename that file to config.dat

Now Resolve should start.

If Resolve still doesn't start, send a new Resolve log file.

Re: Davinci will not open

I followed this instructions and it opened, but it took almost 30 seconds. I tried rendering a video and it shut down and would not open again. Found the same issue you advise on, repeated the process and it opened again so I rendered a video and it worked but each time I open it, it takes longer and longer to load then stopped working. I then went through the same process but this time rendered the video to an external drive and it did not shut down. My other video editing software has no issue.

also, each time I open it, a dialog box opens up asking "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?"

I will run it for a a while and repost if the issue continues. Thanks for your help.

That sounds to me like some security software is interfering here. Maybe it prevents the rendering to your local drive and therefore Resolve is showing longer and longer rendering times and never finishes.

That dialogue box is normal and is part of User Account Control in Windows. You can set up the User Account behaviour in Control Panel/User Accounts. There is no problem just clicking on the Yes box to open Resolve.
It's used as a method of restricting the access of software on a computer that is used by multiple users
