Blackmagic Video Assist 6G-SDI (2016) & RED Komodo 12G-SDI

PostMon May 09, 2022 8:24 pm

I want to use an older 5" Blackmagic Video Assist, the 2016 6G-SDI model, strictly for monitoring from a RED Komodo. I thought the Video Assist cable would work as it has the micro BNC connectors and according to the Komodo spec sheet, the camera could output lower 1080 resolutions via 6G-SDI.

But I then discovered that RED advise only using a 12G-SDI cable with the Komodo regardless of resolution

I'm wondering if the cable is backwards compatible with the 6G Video Assist, especially since I only intend to output a 1080 signal, or will I need to sell my Video Assist and get a newer model? Would the newer 3G-SDI version of the Assist even suffice or would I need to look at the 12G? Or does it just come down to the cable you're using? Any insight would be great!

Red advises this as the center pin of older 3G / HD cables can be slightly larger then most 12G-SDI center pins.

Pushing a very old BNC into a Komodo might stretch and so damage the connector. ;)

We run with multiple Komodo's and we see this issue arise with rental cams that some have connectors that are more loose then others. Some cable work stable and others are flickering.. Changing the cable often fixes the problem. ;)

What are you using to shade the Komodos?

It looks like the Broadcast Gear Convert Duo solves about 95% of the integration. How do you manage tally?

Or i use the Camback4K with RCU option. Which gives me Tally from that as that is 100% BMD Sdi compatible.

Or i use a small SDI based tally light That takes the tally info from the SDI and switch light accordingly. ;)

Also busy now to make a special fiber adaptor for the Komodo which will lock on the back of it.

SDI tally for us isn’t an option, it’s either GPI or TSL.

Keep me posted on the development of the back, I ordered a Komodo yesterday for testing. If I can validate the workflow then we’ll be acquiring a few more.

Good Luck
