Capture problems from Canon UC5000

Hi all, I am trying to capture 8mm tapes on my Canon UC5000 camcorder through BMD Intensity Shuttle into my MacBook Pro, I have component cables (red white yellow) for video and audio in and USB3 out. Log and Capture on media express is not picking up the signal. Desktop video set up recognises the Shuttle is there. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Don
PS I have now managed to get the video into Media Express but it keeps stopping saying it is dropping fields or frames, what does this mean?
