Big Sur and UltraStudio/DeckLink devices

PostMon Nov 16, 2020 5:25 pm

I have Desktop Video 12.0 up and going. Zoom, Skype, Wirecaster, etc. all see the Ultra Studio Mini Recorder. Quicktime, however, only sees it as audio, and not as a camera. I'm at a loss. Any ideas?

I'm having the same issue with my Ultrastudio Mini since upgrading to Big Sur. I can't seem to get input to work in any app, QuickTime, Davinci, Primiere, or media express. Any idea for a fix?

UltraStudio Recorder 3G and Big Sur

PostMon Nov 23, 2020 3:07 am

Failed to check compatibility before upgrading to Big Sur. Now my UltraStudio Recorder 3G is black. I installed the 12.0 beta and still no luck. Any other users having this issue? Any other users found a work around until an official release resolves the issue?

Desktop Video Setup Issues on Mac

PostMon Nov 30, 2020 9:42 am

Hi,

I am hoping someone can assist on this but after upgrading to Big Sur and multiple attempts upgrading, downgrading and re-upgrading the Desktop Video Setup software to the version Desktop Video 12.0 Beta 1. The desktop video setup will still not recognize any of my Ultrastudio Mini Recorders or Mini Monitors.

When checking the "system information" tool, my Mac Book Pro sees the mini-recorders and mini-monitors as connected and named correctly, but no such luck on Desktop Video Setup.

Am I missing something or is the software upgrade useless?

I am having this exact issue with a new iMAC I am trying to hook up today. It worked fine on my old one running all the same exact software. No idea why now it won't see it?

Hmm, that's odd. I use the UltraStudio Mini Recorder (3G version), and upgraded to Big Sur. I had to update the Desktop Video software to 12.0. At first it didn't work because the video input was set to SDI and my connection was HDMI. Have you checked that? I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but these things are easy to overlook.

Same, same, same..... going nuts here. Cannot get Desktop Video to recognize Ultrastudio Mini Monitor on MBP 13" M1 chip, Big Sur 11.0.1. with Desktop Video 12.0b1.

Spent all day installing & uninstalling, changing security settings, etc., etc., etc. Yes, I've clicked "allow" in Security Settings. No luck.

Every other TB device works along the path, USMM lights up white light around TB port when plugged in. Tried it by itself with no other device in chain directly from Appple TB3 to TB2 adapter, no luck. Tried different TB cables, no luck. Tried numerous restarts, no luck.

Ugh.

DeckLink Quad 2 and Apple M1 Macbook Air

PostSat Dec 26, 2020 4:13 pm

Hi Folks,

I did a search and didn't seem to find anything clear/specific to this situation. I have a StarTech enclosure with a DeckLink Quad 2 card in it. It works fine on my Intel Macbook Air. When I moved it to my Apple M1 Macbook Air, it isn't being seen by the Desktop Video Setup app. I did download and install v12.0 Beta 1 and that seemed fine. The MBAir does show the StarTech device on the Thunderbolt bus.

Any ideas? Some magic incantation I need to recite?

No Video Device Detected - Intensity Shuttle

PostMon Dec 28, 2020 11:20 pm

Hi there,

I have uninstalled/reinstalled Desktop Video Setup, restarted my computer several times, made the necessary adjustments in the privacy/security section of my system preferences (Mac OS Big Sur 11.1) and my Macbook Pro supports USB 3.0, but I'm still getting "No Desktop Video Device Detected."

I have emailed BlackMagic and called them during operating hours, but it goes straight to voicemail...

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Big Sur and UltraStudio devices

Same problem with me. After all the nightmare problems of updating from Catalina only Blackmagic manages to keep its drivers despite a wiping of data from a clean install of Big Sur. Anyway the first test after removing old drivers is naturally with QuickTime - nothing working. But the main value of the Blackmagic equipment is to allow Superwide lenses on ENG camera to enhance possibilities for online learning. Fortunately I plug in my UltraStudio Mini Recorder (which BM appears to have disowned as a model) to Zoom and hey presto I am online and can use my laptop 20cms from the lens and appear to be operating in the comfort of a large room (actually 3 metres by 2 metres) and operate my laptop without appearing up the students nostril in their bedroom - learning may proceed. Thanks BM I hope the next Desktop Video software does not take a week to work imperfectly .
Perhaps the QuickTime solution will come soon Best

I hate to reply to my own post, but I did finally figure this out! The issue was that the BM driver was not loading due to a change in BigSur. I had to reboot the machine while holding the TouchID button to enable System Extensions to be managed by the user. Once I did that (and rebooted again), I was able to approve the installation of the driver and everything is up and running.

Ultra Studio Recorder 3G

PostWed Jan 06, 2021 6:33 pm

I have a new MacBook Air with MI Processor, and I have connected an Ultrastudio Recorder 3G, I have installed the software update Desktop video 12.0 Beta 1 and my divide does not work.
I have my device connected with a USB 3 cable and The Desktop video setup program has the following message. No desktop Video device Detected. and my computer has the following message.
No se puede usar el accesorio
Conecta el accesorio a un puerto Thunderbolt de este Mac

The questions is My device has an USB3 Port the same as my MacBook Air. can it work with a simple USB3 to USB3 Cable or I have to use an adapter ?

Be sure to use a genuine (Apple) Thunderbolt 3 cable. And update your Big Sur to the latest version. That did the trick for me.

This is an excellent point, but it is not a requirement to have an "Apple" Branded thunderbolt 3 cable. The mistake I made initially (before the Big Sure upgrade), was I used the Apple power cable thinking it would work :? Quite a few people have made that same mistake.

I purchased the following cable from Amazon and it works perfectly. Whichever cable you choose, just make sure it's Thunderbolt 3 Certified. Keep in mind that Apple does not manufacture its own cables. Any Thunderbolt 3 Certified cable will work.

Desktop Video 12.0 not detecting UltraStudio Recorder 3G

PostWed Jan 13, 2021 9:41 pm

Hi, this is my first time posting on a support forum, so go easy.

I'm on an Intel MacBook Pro (15inch 2018 model, 2.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7), and just upgraded to Big Sur 11.1.

I bought a UltraStudio Recorder 3G and did the install of Desktop Video 12.0, but the ALLOW button under Preferences - Security & Privacy - General did not pop up. I uninstalled and tried 11.7, but nada there either. The software runs, but when I plug in the UltraStudio Recorder 3G, it's the typical No Desktop Video Device Detected.

Yes, I've made sure the cable I'm using is T3, not USB.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled about 15 times, and also tried a lot of other things mentioned on these forums (changing overall security settings in the terminal), but NOTHING. I've called Apple support as I thought the ALLOW button not showing up might be a known issue with Big Sur and third party software, and they didn't really know and redirected me back to the software supplier.

HELP! From what I'm seeing here on the forums it seems individual owners of Intel Big Sur macbooks are being left to sort this out themselves, with varying success rates. I'd really like to get this up and working.

Thanks!

Yes I’m concerned Blackmagic is not doing anything to help us.
I’ve now found that the Big Sur 12.1 Desktop Setup App driver is not working properly in Zoom
The sound is not being recognised when external Blackmagic camera is recognised. Also the Mac camera light is switched on still when the external Blackmagic is chosen
Finally as Blackmagic is not recognised by QuickTime anymore other software using QuickTime cannot be used with a Blackmagic camera
Is anyone from Blackmagic monitoring this forum?

Is that an official statement ? Intensity Shuttle - USB3 not supported on Big Sur ? can't imagine that for a USB3 device... BMD could update drivers for that, is my guess.
I use the Intensity Shuttle - TB2 on 2 MBP's one with Sierra OS and one with Catalina OS works fine for me sofar...

Problem installing an UltraStudio Monitor 3G

PostSat May 08, 2021 4:33 pm

I have installed other UltraStudio devices before and each time the installation is a nightmare. There is a complete lack of sensible step by step instructions or user manual on the BM website. When I download the user manual which is supposedly for this device I get a catch-all manual with numerous devices in it but not this one. For such a well respected company (with good products) I can't believe their installation instructions are so bad.
I am on an M1 Mac and I have installed Desktop Video V12.0. I have rebooted and updated my security settings to allow kernel extensions etc. I have plugged the device into a TB3 port on my Mac but I still get the dreaded "No Desktop Video Device Detected". I can't even find any documentation that tells me whether I should see a light on the device as is the case with UltraStudio Recorder, so I don't even know if it's powered on. Help, please !!

Further to my previous I have discovered that the cable I was using was not Thunderbolt, just USB-C. I was totally unaware of this distinction and this is just the sort of thing that should be in a step by step guide to installation.

Re: Big Sur and UltraStudio/DeckLink devices

I have a Macbook Pro 2015 running Big Sur and I can't get my Ultrastudio Mini Recorder via Desktop Video 12.1 to be recognised in QT Player. Audio from the US mini is recognised. Zoom has no trouble seeing video. In System Preferences / Security / Privacy /Cameras it does not show BM DesktopVideo App as allowed access to the Camera. I had checked Allowed initially when it flagged as blocked. I have since uninstalled and reinstalled DV 12.1 and this time it did not flag that the BM app was blocked. But still it does not show in allowed apps, and video is not recognized.

BTW - I hate Big Sur with a vengeance and it has crashed my otherwise stable Macbook on an almost daily basis.

So what are the solutions?

Re: Big Sur and UltraStudio/DeckLink devices

I think a fairly solid argument that support for Big Sur has some kinks to work out.

I have a test machine I've been working with. It was already running Big Sur (11.4) so I tried installing Desktop Video (12.1), doesn't recognize a UltraStudio Mini Recorder. Removed and reinstalled (multiple times, multiple versions), couldn't get it working.

Erased machine and reinstalled Catalina (10.15.7), applied all security updates, installed Desktop Video (12.1), recognizes UltraStudio Mini Recorder. Upgrade same machine to Big Sur (11.4) again, no longer recognizes UltraStudio Mini Recorder. Uninstall Desktop Video and reinstall again, it recognizes the UltraStudio Mini Recorder but the machine crashes less than 30 seconds later, after the reboot again it "seems" to be working.

This is all with the same laptop, same cables, same TB3 to TB2 adapter.

I'd love to know what the exact voodoo magic needed was...

I had this issue and talked with customer support today. Give this a try. Open Terminal and type the following command

WARNING Only do this if you actually know what you are doing, and I am not responsible if this does not work for you. Also please note that I am using Desktop Video 12.1 and this may or may not work in other releases.

Code: Select all
sudo kextutil /library/extensions/blackmagicio.kext

It will prompt you for your password

Afterwards your devices will show up in Desktop Video and other applications (Except quicktime which is strange)

Customer Service did say a fix for this would be coming in Desktop Video 12.2

Code: Select all
sudo kextutil /library/extensions/blackmagicio.kext

It will prompt you for your password

Afterwards your devices will show up in Desktop Video and other applications (Except quicktime which is strange)

Customer Service did say a fix for this would be coming in Desktop Video 12.2

Tried with a Ultrastudio Monitor 3G. Now is detected but only worked for the video. Audio tab in the blackmagic pane is missing (but is detected in the sound pane).

Any ideas?

This doc only covers installing on M1 Macs for the first time.

Hey Everyone,

I have been reading here to help find a solution for my situation as well. I made an account just to post this current fragile workaround.

On my 2019 iMac, I am using desktop video 12.1, and OS X Big Sur 11.4 currently and a fresh install of the desktop video software will recognize my Decklink Duo 2 card as long as I don't restart the computer after install.

I keep the 12.1 installer file on my desktop, and I run the installer after every startup, but DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO RESTART THE COMPUTER. If the computer needs to be shut down or restarted I just uninstall and install 12.1 Desktop video again and it will work until you restart.

Yup... this is my experience too. :-(

There really should be a clear notice that the 12.0 and 12.1 updates are for M1 Macs only. None of the suggestions in this forum or elsewhere worked for my UltraStudio Mini Monitor.

The only way to avoid the “No Desktop Video Device Detected” problem was to completely uninstall 12.1, including disabling System Integrity Protection in order to the delete the stuck StagedExtensions files, and then reinstall 11.7.

I’m running the latest everything, currently macOS Big Sur 11.4 and Resolve Studio 17.2.2.

I went through the same thing after updating to 12.0. Needless to say, I won’t be installing 12.2 without assurances that this has been fixed.

It’s an awesome device when it’s working!
No, you probably don’t need a calibrated, non-computer display.

I tried, It's easy.

After you install the Desktop Video, do not restart the computer till it ask you for permission of privacy for some apps.

Then go to Privacy > Firewall Options ( should unlock to activate) > +
and add Desktop video setup.app.

That's it.

I guess I can't post URLs so imagine these are clickable links below...

So, like most folks, I've been pulling my hair out over kexts and Big Sur (intel). Fortunately for me, the UltraStudio MiniRecorder is secondary to what I do so I've had a bit of luxury to ignore it, come back to it, ignore it, come back to it (lather, rinse, repeat many times).

However today I stumbled on something that both worked for me (everyone has a version of that story, at least once) AND makes technical sense, which is a little rarer (while I've not been an internals developer for any platform in a LONG time, it's not completely unfamiliar territory).

I had a long, detailed (with descriptions and references) suggestion for what worked for me and the forum ate the post because I guess I can't post URLs. So here is the executive summary instead.

Make sure you've approved the kexts, command line if needed. (Unclear honestly if what follows overrides or requires this):

link --> uaa [dot] teamdynamix [dot] com [slash] TDClient/36/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=50

using 9ZGFBWLSYP for the ID -- see link --> www [dot] jamf [dot] com [slash] jamf-nation/discussions/38634/kernel-extensions-big-sur-blackmagic

Next, see the Troubleshooting section here:

link --> softron [dot] zendesk [dot] com [slash] hc/en-us/articles/115001568114-TROUBLESHOOTING-Video-card-not-seen-kext-not-loaded

for how to induce manual loading of the kext (or alternately, generating more detailed diagnostic info on failure). For me, Desktop Video Setup did not see the device prior to doing this, DID see the device after executing the manual load, no interim reboot required.

Because I would like to get _some_ work done today, I did not yet follow through with the trigger-panic-medic auth database rebuild so I don't know if that "permanently" resolves the issue or not but it makes a lot of technical sense.

Hopefully this helps someone out there.

-brad

My config for comparison:

BMD DesktopVideo 12.1
MBP2018, macOS 11.4 (20F71, Intel)
UltraStudio MiniRecorder (HDMI in for my case -> Apple TB2->TB3 dongle -> OWC TB3 Dock -> MBP)

Nope. That ain't working either.

I've not uninstalled Desktop Video with the included uninstall app. I've then removed the BlackmagicIO.kext and DeckLink_Driver.kext via the Terminal.

I then reinstalled 12.1. It never alerted me to any extension changes nor did it ask me to enable any permissions. I then opened the System Pref / Security & Privacy and there were no permissions waiting to be enabled. Checked to see it if Desktop Video Setup had Files and Folder access and it's listed as having access.

Launch the Desktop Video Setup and it sees my UltraStudio Mini Monitor (which is connected via an Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adaptor). All settings are accessible.

Reboot and Desktop Video Setup no longer sees my UltraStudio Mini Monitor.

I then tried installing 11.7. This time I was alerted that System Extensions had changed and I need to give them permission. Opened System Prefs and gave permission to Blackmagic Inc.

Reboot and Desktop Video Setup no longer sees my UltraStudio Mini Monitor. Sigh

So I still have no access to the UltraStudio Mini Monitor.
