BMPCC base ISO (ASA) question?

PostSat Oct 12, 2013 10:47 pm

Hey guys, is there any benefit by shooting below ISO 800 with the BMPCC?
My understanding is that the base ISO is 800 so could I expect cleaner (less grain/noise) by shooting at 200 or 400?
Thanks guys-

Manual Said :
The optimum ISO setting for the Pocket Cinema Camera and Cinema Camera is 800ASA. For Production Camera 4K choose the lowest ISO for the available lighting conditions.
Depending on your situation, however, you may choose a lower or higher ISO setting. For example,
in low light conditions 1600ASA would be suitable but may introduce some visible noise. In bright
conditions 400ASA would be best to record richer colors.

I hope this helps

You will get less noise if you expose correctly.

It is best to expose to the right (ETTR) and give the camera as much light as possible without clipping and highlights that you want to retain.

Here is a good thread discussing the noise and ISO relationship:

And another video from Tom that is very useful:

I recommend keeping it at ASA 400 on the BMPCC ,if you need a lot of detail - although the ideal general setting would be ASA 800 according to manual, as stated above (page 18).

We have shot some short fashion films for an online store in the last few days in raw (controlled environment in the studio). ASA 400 produced stunning detail and colours in the grading process (important to mediate the quality of fabrics / leather), which even allowed to grab film stills for web use (banners etc., where the resolution is sufficient). The results look fantastic, even on a MBP Retina Display.

ASA 800 and 1600 were harder to handle for this specific task (although exposed correctly), because the level of noise was higher and a little bit distracting, which was not desired in this project. Of course, you could use a de-noiser - but this always means a loss in quality.

I consider this camera to be really revolutionary :-) Next one will be the 4K BMCC.

Best,
T
