Cintel Scanner HDR in a Single (Slower) Pass

Could the Cintel Scanner HDR scanning process be updated in a software update to complete both captures in a single slower pass? Capturing both normal and HDR high exposure pictures then move onto the next frame, instead of doing one scan, rewind, then the other. Would that aid in alignment since the film would be in the same place?

Hi Peter,

this was our initial plan, however the film when run in reverse has a slightly different skew than when run forward. We measure this skew and do all the things required to manage this, however found there were too many factors to make it reliable.

So the short answer is, we'll not be supporting it.

Cheers

I think Peter was asking could the scanner just slow down and flash each frame twice.
The overscan area on the film, particularly on 16mm is huge, if the scanner slowed down you could easily get two flashes in before the picture area had moved out of frame.
I don't think he was asking about scanning in reverse.

No, the scanner is a continuous motion scanner and exposure/readout times etc.. and stop and go motion of old scanners is a thing of the past.

The only viable option is running the high exposure in 'reverse' to avoid excess film running but we explored that thoroughly and ran into a few roadblocks that don't make it reliable enough.

In short, it works how it's always going to work.
