Still Photographer to Motion...

Hi everyone.

I have a lot of questions, as I am a still photographer that's been really trying to get more into filming, etc. to expand my services to my local public. Basically, I'm trying to do something the Mom-tographers, aren't doing so I can stand out.

So, I have a few questions. Firstly, how feasible is it to use frame grabs from Cinema DNG and somehow use them as still images for printing? Should I convert to PSD and them open the single ones in Photoshop, then save as jpeg...etc...

Well, let's just stick with that question for now.

I understand this is a very basic question. I just want to do my research properly, since the bulk of my work is in stills.

The image quality should be fine, but you'll typically be stuck with a 1/48 second shutter when shooting at 24 FPS. This will usually result in overly blurry images if there's any motion in the frame.

FredP, is there a solution for that? Higher ISO, frame rate, etc.?

If the shot is still enough and well exposed then I don't see why anything but the 3mp resolution would be an issue with using it for print. It produces images worthy of being called "photographic".

And 4x6 prints at 300dpi are actually only 1800x1200 so you're getting more than 300dpi worth of detail.

I wouldn't recommend it as your dedicated stills camera though! But I personally would have no issue with using the odd frame here and there and I'm used to 22mp full frame stills.

I for sure wouldn't be using it as my dedicated still. But I am trying to devise a way to one-up my game around my town.

I charge a very reasonable rate for my work, but it's generally viewed as 'expensive' around my town. I am constantly being beaten out of business by mom-tographers that charge pennies, and think that the camera will make them a pro.

I've got to go somewhere they can't.

I already do a lot that they can't, and offer some video. But I think it's time to get real with the video.
