HDMI Connection to Display Port 1.2

PostSun Dec 26, 2021 4:04 am

Hello,

I was interested in possibly connecting my 6K Pro directly to my computer. My Mac uses a hub that includes a Display Port 1.2 jack.

I've located a cable that could connect the HDMI output of the 6K Pro to the Display Port 1.2 jack in the Mac hub.

Is there any problem in making that connection? Can the 6K Pro HDMI jack be used without damage to the camera in this manner?

Please advise.

Thanks!

I have no idea what hub you are using , but it's most likely that the connection is an output and not an input. If thats the case , it will not work. You need a capture card/device.

The hub I'm using is the CalDigit TS3Plus+.

It has a wide variety of ports including USB-A, USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 and others. The ports are designed to be in and out ports.

So, if I connect the 6K Pro HDMI port to the Display Port 1.2 on the CalDigit TS3Plus+ to display on my Mac will it pose any damage problems for the camera?

I have the exact same dock , the DP1.2 port is only for displays not cameras or other video sources.
I don't expect it will damage ( but why risk it ) the camera - but 100% that port on the caldigit will NOT allow you to view the camera on your Mac.

read again and very slowly:

the HDMI port of the camera is a HDMI OUTport
and the display port of the caldigit is also an OUTport

the probability of breaking the camera is unlikely, but you will not be able
to see your camera image on the computer, because two OUTports meet here.

to get the image from the camera into the computer you need either a video I/O
(BMD mini recorder 3G or Ultrastudio HD) or a HDMI to USB-C adapter
(less recommended because of poorer quality).

Thanks for the clarification. That is very helpful!

The UltraStudio HD was mentioned as an option. I currently have a Thunderbolt 3 iMac. I will currently be using it to edit footage with DaVinci and Final Cut Pro.

I'm not familiar with UltraStudio HD. What can be accomplished with it that cannot be accomplished otherwise?

Other than viewing camera footage on the Mac, what other benefits does UltraStudio HD offer in a studio setting?

a video I/O is necessary for color grading on a calibrated monitor
