Frame Rate (beginner's question)
Hi,
I'd appreciate some advice - what framerate should I shoot given that I'm looking to distribute (I say 'distribute' but I really mean something to play and watch on HD TVs - this is not a commercial activity) via blu-ray after editing on a Mac with FCPX/7?
I've decided to start off by using Prores 'video' (as opposed to 'film') at least until I get to grips with LUTs (which currently appear to be an art form in themselves - my efforts with Bloom's cat* are somewhat pathetic I have to confess although I'm trying hard to believe that the cat is indeed a muddy shade of grey/brown... or, possibly, bright blue!!!). Prores Video immediately gets me into a league above what I'm used to but is easy to process whilst also leaving me room for improvement as and when. Small steps.
I'm in the UK so presumably PAL and all the shooting is within the EU (primarily UK, Finland and Netherlands).
BMCC 2.5k so, as you'll know, the options are 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 & 30 fps.
Not entirely unrelated to this - any recommendations for writing to blu ray will undoubtably assist too! I have compressor (albeit 3.5 so thinking to upgrade to 4) but there might be something superior? I notice that Encore isn't CC enabled so I'm guessing that Adobe no longer develop it. I'm not looking for complex menu layers or anything just "pop the disc in, sit back and enjoy" sort of stuff. Emphasis on quality rather than complexity.
I thank the group for any assistance - there's a lot for a newcomer to get to grips with...
Cheers,
Tim
* for those not familiar with Bloom's Cat (Percy) it is slightly more complex than Schrodinger's and the ungraded ProresHQ footage can be downloaded from Philip Bloom's web site (review of BMPCC)
It is fabulous that some people are prepared to do this for the community.
