Capture and Switching on iMac/MacMini

Well, this is my first post as a virgin Blackmagic user. I'm specking out a system that will more than likely include a BMD ATEM Production Studio 4K and either a HyperDeck or iMac/MacMini for capture.
My question is: If I were to go with the iMac/MacMini for capturing and/or streaming video, can I do this in the background while controlling the ATEM Production Studio? If so, what specs would be necessary for the iMac or MacMini of the current line (Autumn 2013) to do so? I would more than likely use one of BMD's HD/SDI or HDMI to Thunderbolt capture interfaces.
I have many more questions, but answering this would be a great start. Thanks in advance!
