Recording uncompressed to HDD (Hyperdeck Studio HD Pro)

PostTue Apr 19, 2022 11:05 am

I'm currently overseeing an extensive media archiving project with my company for a client, where we'll extract footage from Umatic, Betacam and VHS tapes using old Sony VTRs. At present, our plan is to purchase a couple of Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus units and connect them to the VTRs.

Our client wants us to archive certain footage uncompressed, and the Hyperdeck Studio HD Pro units appear to offer this due to its SSD inputs. So I've been pricing these up instead of the HD Plus.

Now, for security reasons, we can't use SD cards or SSDs. We can only use storage devices that have a security certificate of FIPS 140-2 Level 3 - and from what I've found so far, these simply do not exist in either SD or SSD form.

After some basic research - the reason the HD Pro can record uncompressed is due to the high transfer speed of the SSDs. Obviously, SSDs are a no-go for us. My question is if it's possible to record uncompressed to a HDD using the USB port on the back of the HD Pro? If so, am I going to run into any issues like dropped frames etc?

One last note - the HDD in question that I'm looking at has a data rate of 223Mbps. It's the iStorage 8TB diskAshur DT2 HDD in case you wanted to look at any other specs.

TIA :)

The current Hyperdeck Studio HD Pro does not feature analog inputs or uncompressed recording.

The older HyperDeck Studio Pro 2 features both of those but lacks the ability to record to an external drive.

The Hyperdeck Extreme models have analog inputs and external recording but not to an uncompressed codec. It doesn't really matter, capturing uncompressed analog is like recording SD at 4K, sure one can do it but the quality isn't going to be any better.

Good Luck

Jonathan, you could use the iStorage SSD
https://istorage-uk.com/product/diskashur-pro2/
and connect it to the USB-C port of the Hyperdeck Studio HD Pro.
You would need a USB3.0 to USB-C adapter, as far as I can see.

For analog conversion you could go with a Teranex Mini Analog to SDI 12G:

and then into a Hyperdeck Studio HD Mini:

and then over USB-C to your iStorage SSD.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.
