Getting USB3.0 to work with ATEM 1 M/E

PostSun Dec 01, 2013 12:43 am

Hi folks,
I'm having a devil of a time getting the ATEM 1 M/E to connect via USB 3.0. My PC is the HP Z400 with a Lacie USB 3.0 PCI Express card with the NEC D720200 chip. The BMD website recommends driver 2.0.4 or above and firmware version 3.0.2.5 or above. I had version 2.0.34 and 4.0.1.5 (I think) but I can't find the drivers for 2.0.4 anywhere. The http://www.station-drivers.com/page/nec.htm website that the USB3_Readme_Before_You_Install.pdf guide points to only has up to driver 2.0.39, which I've installed. I've also updated the firmware to 4.0.2.5, but I'm still getting an error when connecting the ATEM to the USB 3.0 port.

The error states:
"This device can perform faster
This Blackmagic ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher can transfer information faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 port."

I've tried the card in "Slot 1 PCIe2 x8(4)" and "Slot 3 PCIe x8(4)" with no change (I will return it to the PCIe2 slot as I understand PCI Express 2.0 is recommended). I do see both the ATEM and the 3.0 Hub/Controller in Device Manager but I can't see the ATEM in Media Express to record from it.

Anyone got any ideas? I've got a Decklink SDI card on the way as well, but it has been delayed so the USB was supposed to be my backup :(

Thanks,
Jeff

An update, I also tried a Rocketfish USB 3.0 card with no change in results. That one also had a mini 4 pin power connector on it, which I did have an available power cable for (the Lacie required a full size 4 pin, which I didn't have). It didn't make a difference though, as expected, since it's only for non-self powered USB source power.

Thanks,
Jeff

Sounds like the same issue as all the owners of USB3 based Intensity Shuttles have.

I'm planning on grabbing a USB3 enclosure for an external harddrive, then posting up some speed tests with sustained data-rates. If the hard drives can maintain a faster data rate then the Shuttles or ATEM's need, then there will be some serious explaining needed from the vendor.

Hi Rex,
I did run across some mention of that but did not find any solution...I can't even get the card to recognize the ATEM as a USB3.0 device, was there any fix for that you might have run across?

The external drive is a good idea, that would let me know if it's the card or the ATEM. I'm curious what speeds the USB3.0 might put out...I've got two 7200 1TB drives in my Z400 and the BMD speed test shows max I can record is up to 720p 59.95 YUV at 10bit to the 2nd drive, which is fortunately what I need, but surprised it says I can't do anything 1080 when I bought the PC based on BMD's recommendations.

Thanks,
Jeff
