Blackmagic Video Assist 6G-SDI (2016) & RED Komodo 12G-SDI

I want to use an older 5" Blackmagic Video Assist, the 2016 6G-SDI model, strictly for monitoring from a RED Komodo. I thought the Video Assist cable would work as it has the micro BNC connectors and according to the Komodo spec sheet, the camera could output lower 1080 resolutions via 6G-SDI.
But I then discovered that RED advise only using a 12G-SDI cable with the Komodo regardless of resolution
I'm wondering if the cable is backwards compatible with the 6G Video Assist, especially since I only intend to output a 1080 signal, or will I need to sell my Video Assist and get a newer model? Would the newer 3G-SDI version of the Assist even suffice or would I need to look at the 12G? Or does it just come down to the cable you're using? Any insight would be great!
