Please help me decide: PC vs CC

PostWed Dec 04, 2013 4:45 pm

The last three weeks have been maddening. I discovered the BMPC on youtube and immediately decided to get that. Then I saw all the negative comments about BM not responding to feature requests, setbacks of the 4k camera, etc. etc. So I decided to walk away and get a DSLR. Then I saw a BMCC short movie that looked as good as a similar short filmed with a 5k Epic and the Epic was NO BETTER than the BMCC. Watching them both on a HD monitor, I think the CC was even better than the Epic- which goes to show how a skilled post artist makes a important difference.

Anyway, so then I was set on the BMCC, but BMCC users say they haven't had any updates on their firmware. So back to PC. But then I realized the CC and PC are basically the same price because you get a $1000 full version of Resolve and the other software with the CC.

Now that the speedboosters are out, I'm leaning towards the CC because I can use my "longer" dslr lenses and get the same FOV that I'm used to. I also like the idea of a SSD rather than SD card. Buying SD cars fast enough to equal the capacity of an SSD (like the price of 4 64gb SD cards = 1 256gb SSD approx.).

So my question goes out to you all who have these cameras. If you wanted to get a camera for short films and documentaries, between the two, PC or CC?

If you browse through the many threads in the cinematography section you will find many posts that will help with your decision.

It really depends on you needs and your shooting style. Some people are better off with a Canon C100, others are better off with a DSLR.

I have both the BMCC EF and the BMPCC. I also have a Sony FS100 and a Nikon D800. On some jobs I shoot on Canon 5D, Sony FS700, Sony F3, and many others. They all have their pros and cons.

For simple run and gun documentary work I'd probably grab a Canon C100. It's designed with that type of shooting in mind.

Why do I have a BMPCC and a BMCC?? Because they both offer me different things. The BMCC shoots 2.5k RAW. It shoots to SSD, it have better ports/connections, it's easier to rig. The BMPCC is tiny. I can fit it into spaces very few cameras can get into. I can take it to places where any other camera would not be allowed or would be to visible. The BMPCC travels with most of the time which means I always have a camera I can capture footage with.

I don't think there is a perfect camera. There is simple a camera that is right for the job in hand....

Oh and you might want it include in your thread title what set-up you need help with.

Something like: BMCC vs BMPCC, which would be a better choice.

This forum covers many products and often those who come on here to help are doing so between other jobs or on a tea break. They simple scan the thread titles and if it's obscure, like yours, they simple skip over it. So you then miss out on their input.

Thanks. I will fix the title.

I'm not interested in a DSLR. I don't like the look. I am a colorist of sorts, and understand the process, which is why I am focusing on the BM cameras.

Also, I'm not buying it for work. Just for fun. So cost is a big factor, so I eliminated the Canon C100 and Sony in the beginning- plus I'm not really that fond of their "look" either.

The size of the PC is a big factor, but with the exception of your movie on your blog, I haven't seen any PC footage that is nearly as good as the CC. But the PC is excellent. Yours is spectacular, so I know it's possible. I just don't know.... lol

Movie on my blog? I've not posted any work shot on the BMPCC as yet. :-)

The image from the BMPCC is very close to the BMCC. The free version of Resolve does almost all the things the full version does. For most hobbiests it's more than enough.

I'd go with the BMPCC and spend the savings on good lenses, more SD cards, etc.

Sound on both cameras really needs an external pre-amp and an external recorder would be a plus.

Oh I'm sorry. I got you confused with Adam Reid. lol http://cinemacamera.net/2013/10/bmpcc-s ... ter-eoshd/

I think you might be right. I haven't seen any well graded raw footage from the PCC yet either. (I'm sure there is some out there though). Your thoughts make a lot of sense.

Did you really just refuse to buy a camera because you don't like how it looks in the same sentence you used to explain your technical skill?

Lol. Yes. I don't like the image the DSLR produces. Sorry about that.
