h264 recorder - no settings required

PostThu Dec 05, 2013 3:41 pm

Hi,

I have a h.264 pro recorder and can't seem to get it running under Mac OX or Windows. Both operating systems shows the item in the os specific devices list, also shows up in the device drop down inside black magic express software but doesn't capture video or audio.

My Hardware specs are:
Mac Book Air
OS X 10.9
i5 / 8GB RAM

HP Probook
Windows 7 Professional / service pack 1
i3 / 3GB RAM

My main intention is to capture tv shows off a BT Vision box with an HDCP stripper, but in the mean time I am testing this with a PS3 input via the HDMI in. The game is running as opposed to being just at the PS3 menu. I have tested the feed via an HDMI monitor to verify the AV feed is OK.

It looks as though all I need to do is select HDMI input in the system settings, but they're greyed out - would really appreciated some help with this.

Have you at least tried launching media express? Also... On windows at least there is a special configuration program called the blackmagic design control panel... Not sure if what you displayed is the equivalent...it doesn't look like it. You should be able to select the appropriate bit rate settings at least

Note the PS3 has HDCP enabled all the time and will not pass through the HDMI input.

Hi,

Thank you for replying, appreciated.

I have opened the Media Express software, it shows in the devices drop down but no feed appears in the log and capture window.

I have added the HDMI splitter which strips HDCP encryption to the playstation feed but unfortunately this hasn't made any effect.

Attached is the Mac sys preferences which are greyed out, the Windows equivalent is also greyed out.

Any other things I should try?

What Gary says is right. PS3 is always encrypted so that would prevent a signal coming in. But it should not prevent the control panel from becoming active.

You've mentioned trying it on Win and Mac, if the result is the same I might suggest the unit is not functioning right or is not getting enough power which might happen if plugged into a USB port that is not powered (example a hub on keyboard).

Hi,

Cheers for the heads up on the PS3, I've switched to a raspberry pi hdmi input which is definitely not encrypted.

The main power supply I am using is not the original, it is a 12v 3mA adaptor, might this be the issue? The light appears on the Pro recorder which signifies it's powered up. I'm unsure what you mean about it drawing power from the USB hub, it's connected directly to my Mac Book Air but I'm unsure as to why it would be drawing USB power when it is running off the mains adaptor.

I re-tested with the Pi and different USB ports, but still the same issues with the settings panel :-(

Well, you might be under powering it a bit, which might cause it to not fully be recognized.

The shipped power supply has an output of 12V @ .84A. While i'm pretty sure the device doesn't quite draw near a full amp, i'm pretty sure that 3 miliamps .003A is not gonna cut it. It might be enough to turn the light on, but it's probably not gonna connect the device.

Try with the default power supply and let us know if it connects.

This was from another posting I made about the raspberry pi.

I have connected my raspberry pi to the ATEM switcher input running in 1080i/59.94 on the switcher. The pi config.txt settings used were:

hdmi_mode=5 for 1080i60 which is close to what the ATEM wants. Assumes hdmi_group=1
hdmi_pixel_encoding=3 YCbCr which is the color space the ATEM wants.
disable_overscan=1 which will use the full 1920x1080 image size instead of the reduced one by default.
Reboot.

I did not try this on the H.264 encoder but it would be a good starting point. Make sure the encoder settings match.

I'm working on a Justmacros connected RasPi video playout device. So... I can confirm it works.. although I'm running mostly in 720p60. I recall testing at 1080i60 and it worked fine.
