Viewfinder silver mounting port?

PostFri Jun 03, 2022 7:16 pm

I've tried to search for this all over the internet, but haven't found anything that helps identify it...

What is the big silver mount with a large screwhole for at the front of the viewfinder plate? It's much bigger than a normal cold shoe - and clearly I don't know what the terminology is that I should be searching for :)

It's most likely for mounting an external monitor. The threaded hole, if it is larger than a 1/4" one, will be 3/8".

This is a 3/8" hole for mounting additional accessories and doubles as a holder for the viewfinder's screw when not attached to the camera.

The viewfinder was originally released with the full URSA which used 3/8" threads to attach it. All other URSAs have used 1/4" (which is why this size seems out of place).

Also, BMDs accessory mic holder fits in this mounting location. It is only designed for mounting light weight accessories, not anything heavy or thst adds a lot of torque to the mount.

On a similar topic or part:
I just received my BM Ursa Viewfinder and am trying to correctly install it on my G2.
On page 151 of the manual , Item 4 it says” “The hole inside the front handle is used with the thumb screw ….”
However, the thumb screw I received with the viewfinder is 3/8”, not the 1/4” of the top mounting points.
I am doing something incorrect, or was the wrong thumb screw sent?
What is more despite a plethora of screws etc. I cannot find a suitable screw or bolt to adapt the viewfinder.

And thanks for the information on the "silver mounting port". I have used it to store the 3/8" Thumbs crew for now.

I might not remember correctly as it has been a few years, but I seem to recall that some parts needed to mount the viewfinder only comes with the separate shoulder mount accessory.

Yes, I have the shoulder mount but the "Thumbscrew" comes with the viewfinder, and it is the wrong size. I am wondering if I got old stock.

You're supposed to use the thumbscrew that comes with the top handle in the shoulder mount kit.

The thumbscrew that comes with the viewfinder is for the big Ursa 4K, not Ursa Mini.

Thanks for that. I have no idea where that thumbscrew might be so I will buy a new one somewhere. The length will be the issue. Maybe Small Rig.

If the don't have the 1/4" screw then you definitely got old stock.

When I discovered this early 2022 I messaged Tim Schumann on the forums and he 1) got them to start shipping with the cameras (or so it seemed) and 2) mailed me one directly. You may have the same success if you message him.

Thanks Mike - I will do that as to buy it in Canada is $25 plus $29 for shipping! Plus taxes.
I bought it from Henry's so I will let them know it was old stock as well. Thanks

BMD actually sent me 2 when they mailed it. If you have trouble getting one let me know and I'd be happy to ship the spare one to you.

Sure - that would be great Mike as the ones in Canada are hard to find. Let me know shipping costs and will send you some money and buy it off you.
