Capturing BMCC - Media Express works.. Live&Ultrascope dont

PostWed Dec 11, 2013 1:27 pm

Hello,

Planned to record straight to disk from BMCC with Ultrascope.
Edit: I succeeded in using Media Express. Works very well.

I tried all other possiblities but it did not work at all. See below.

--

HARDWARE:
I have a Zbook 15 Win 8.1 i7 4700qm, 32GB Ram, 512 GB SSD, 512 GB second SSD, nvidia Quadra k2100m (maxedout version for the 15 inch model), Optimus, Displayport, Thunderbolt.

Ultrascope needs according to the Manual:
"Blackmagic UltraScope requires a graphics card that supports Open GL 2.1 or better and have a Texture Fill Rate of >22,000 MT/s (22 GT/s)."

The Nvidia K2100m:
Workstation-GPU
DirectX-11
OpenGL-4.3
Texture Fill Rate: 23.8 (billion/sec).
28-nm-Chip GK106 (Kepler-Serie), 576 active Shaders
576 CUDA cores
Benchmark at Furmark: 1013
2 quad HD monitors can be connected at native Resolution

--

Attempt 1:
Ultrascope says on startup that it is not compatible with that GPU.
When pressing ok the program closes.

Does not work.

Resolve 10 Live Mode - stays black

PostWed Dec 11, 2013 2:24 pm

Attempt 2:
Resolve 10 Live Mode

Seems to be a reasonable alternative:
"But since I discovered Resolve 10's Live Mode I never opened Ultrascope again. In resolve I have resizable scopes, a large preview with crop marks and the option to test how a certain lighting will grade. There is a slight lag of the video and the spacial limitation of a two meter thunderbolt cable, but otherwise this solution is perfect for me. (Have not yet tried to record anything.)"
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14525#p91281

This is how I tried it:
1) In Preferences Video IO/GPU Setting I select the BMCC connected with Thunderbolt for Live
2) Then I restart Resolve 10
3) Then I use a new project, create a new timeline
4) Go to Color use the Menu Color/Turn on Live
5) Ok now I see a corresponding window, where I can do freezes and so on, but it stays black

Does not work.

Resolve 10 Capture via Thunderbolt

PostWed Dec 11, 2013 4:25 pm

Attempt 3:
Resolve 10 Capture via Thunderbolt

Most promising one so far.
1) Change Video IO/GPU Setting to Capture=BMCC, Live=None
2) Restart
3) Go to Media File/capture (Project settings same FPS as in Camera)
4) Got a Decklink Problem Popup (After Restarting the computer it went away. Restarting Resolve did not work)
5) I can see the image from the camera
6) I can push Capture now

It says time remaining 0 hours (I have an empty disk there)
The orange bar is flickering
A black dpx file is running a counter and seems to get created.
When I push Capture Now and go to Edit, I can see a black Clip in my Pool.
I can create a timeline and put the clip on there. Still black.
When I drag and drop it on the timeline again it says "Failed to initialize Decklink card - Please install DeckLink card/driver and restart resolve." I can continue to work.
I can also export the clip in Deliver to Quicktime. But it is still black of course.
The length of the clip seems ok to what I recorded.

Does not work.

Hi John, Resolve Live can be used with the Ultrastudio 4k and Ultrastudio Mini Recorder to capture frames, just one, for each time you select snapshot on the color page. This is using the SDI input. However I'm not familiar with your PC and it's GPU to know if it's suitable for Resolve. Have you tried placing a clip in the media pool and can see it in the media page, create a timeline and grade in the color page?

Hi Peter,

The Zbook 15 is actually the new HP workstation notebook.
The performance seems great.
Files from the BMCC playback and grade well & also on the spec sheet seems reasonable(I put this information in the first post of this thread).

I had compatibility issues with:
- Ultrascope
- Resolve Capture
- Resolve Live

Finally I got it to work.
- Media Express captures long ProRes files very well.

It would be awesome if the other programs would some day work as well.
Best,
John.
