Capturing HDMI out from a DSLR or Canon C300

PostFri Dec 20, 2013 10:44 pm

Hey folks,

PRIMARY QUESTION
I am putting together some training videos and I need to capture the menus from DSLR and video cameras. If I connect an HDMI cable from the output of the camera to a television set, I can display whatever is on the LCD directly on the TV. This works perfectly for a live classroom but I need to record the steps to make specific menu settings.

In reviewing the site, I think that I can do this with an Intensity Shuttle. My understanding is that I could connect the camera to the HDMI input, and the Intensity Shuttle to the Mac via USB3 and use Media Express to record whatever is on the camera LCD.

I would have tried this with the Matrox device I already have but alas, they have no Mavericks drivers and don't have a delivery date. In the case of the Matrox, the story (untested) was that I could use Premiere Pro CC's Capture function to grab anything pushed through the MX02. Does this work the same way with the Intensity Shuttle?

I like the idea of its portability, I like the price and I like that a dealer down in Toronto has one in stock. The only thing left is to find out if it will actually do the job I want.

SECONDARY QUESTION
My Canon C300 has the capability to push 4.2.2 out to an external recorder like an AJA device. Could I use the Intensity Shuttle to act as an interface to push content directly to the computer hard disks as a secondary store to the CF cards? The C300 puts out uncompressed HDMI so my theory is that the answer is yes, but I don't know.

Thanks in advance for advice and help.

Ross
