Is BM Footage in LOG & LOG to REC 709 LUT?

PostSat Jan 21, 2023 7:14 pm

I'm new to my BMCCPro and am starting out with ProRes and Final Cut. Will move on to BRAW and DaVinci next.

I'm using Color Finale in Final Cut and Color Finale is asking me whether my BM footage is shot in LOG. Is all BM footage automatically shot in LOG or is that a setting? If it is a setting, where do I check on that setting?

Color Finale is also asking me if I have access to the camera manufacturer LOG to REC 709 technical LUT.

How would I check to see if I have access to this LOG to REC 709 technical LUT or not? Is this something built into the BMCCPro or is it something I need to download and add? If I need to download and add it, where would I access it and how would I install it

Thanks!

Thank you for your reply.

I am familiar with the manual. My work brings me in contact with numerous manuals in the areas of my work - animation, music production, 3D production, and cinema. What is common in these manuals is an "index" where one can easily reference what one is looking for. Just simply look up the related term in the index and one has easy access to the manual entries for that term.

The BMPCC manual does not appear to offer such an index tool. (If it does, it is not obvious.)

This is not the first time I have run into this problem with the BMPCC manual. The "Contents" section at the front of the manual is of some help - but only if you already know where your term fits into any of the content areas. It would be appreciated if Black Magic would include an index in the next upgrade of their manual.

Thanks again.

If shot in BRAW it is always log, the camera will add the viewing LUT to the file as metadata which can be activated in post or left off.

If shot in ProRes you can choose to use FILM or VIDEO or EXTENDED VIDEO.
The settings are in the camera's menu -> RECORD page 2

If you leave the setting at FILM then you can choose to bake in a LUT
The setting is in the camera's menu -> RECORD page 3 -> APPLY LUT IN FILE

You can export the LUT from your camera:
In the camera's menu -> LUT
Tap the LUT you want to export, than tap the arrow left right icon in the bottom middle.
Select EXPORT SELECTED LUT
Select your media (CFAST / SD Card / USB-C SSD drive)
Tap EXPORT

You can also download the BM Color Science Gen5 LUTs here (I extracted them from Resolves LUT folder for you):
Blackmagic Design Gen 5 Film to rec709 LUTs.zip
(262.94 KiB) Downloaded 269 times

They are located after an installation of Resolve in:
C:\ProgramData\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\LUT\Blackmagic Design

Film to Video is a strict rec709 conversion with some clipping.
Film to Video Extended would be the better choice as it will retain highlights by applying a shoulder compression.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thanks for your reply.

I was able to successfully load the LUT.

However, I am still confused about how to know if my ProRes footage is being shot in LOG or not. Does this have something to do with selection of FILM, VIDEO, or EXTENDED VIDEO on RECORD page 2 of camera menu? And if so, which selection will result in LOG for Pro Res?

Thanks again for your help!

FILM is Blackmagic's term for LOG.
So if you want your ProRes to live in LOG just make sure to select FILM.

VIDEO and EXTENDED VIDEO is the same as applying one of those external LUTs I uploaded for you.
When set to either of them your camera will bake in that LUT as the look.
