BM Cam App, holding phone upright

PostTue Sep 19, 2023 6:16 pm

I find it very convenient to hold the iPhone upright while shooting video in landscape format. However on my iPhone 13 it creates footage in 2160x1214 only, not 4K. Holding the phone in landscape orientation I get 4K footage.
This might be related to technical or SDK issues but it would be nice to shoot 4K while holding the iPhone in portrait orientation.

BM: any comments?

Thanks,
Oliver

I don’t know if I understood correctly but to shoot portrait video you only should enable vertical video in the preference panel.
Or you would shoot landscape video keeping phone vertically?

True, my post was not clear enough due to my lack of English skills.

I want to shoot classic landscape format video, 16:9, not vertical video ("allow vertical video" is toggled OFF in the settings).

Please see attached illustration. I want to hold the phone vertically (first image) and shoot landscape video in 4K, not hold the phone like in the second image.

When you shoot in horizontal mode you get 4K. If you rotate the iPhone, you have a choice of 4K vertical or "cropped" sensor horizontal. It would appear your iPhone and the BMD app are working as expected.

I understand that’s currently it’s a feature not a bug. However it would be nice to have ful res also when holding the phone vertically. It’s a feature request.

Your phone sensor is being fully used as it’s showing you so there isn’t anything anyone can add.

I’m sure I’m being really dim, but I can’t seem to make sense of this! Like the OP I would like to mount my iPhone vertically, but to shoot 4K 16x9. When I alternate between vertical and landscape the amount of recording time left on my phone changes, suggesting that when it’s vertical it’s shooting at a lower resolution. Please help me to understand what I’m doing wrong…

That’s how I understand it:

Obviously shooting in 4K gives you less recording time.
