is this mini pc good enough for resolve?

PostFri Jan 12, 2024 11:35 am

I don't know masses about PC specs, so I'd really appreciate some advice here from anyone who does!

So I'm currently running resolve on a beelink mini pc with these specs:

Beelink GTR Mini PC AMD Ryzen 7 3750H Processor (2.3 up to 4GHz) 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Bluetooth 5.0 Dual Gigabit Ethernet DP HDMI USB C High-Performance 4K Computer for Business Office Gamer

It's pretty slow in places (and sometimes crashes). Notably with magic mask it works at 1fps which is painful.

So I was looking at this to upgrade:

HP Z2 Mini G9 Workstation 5F137EA [Intel i7-13700K, 32GB RAM, 1000GB SSD, NVIDIA RTX A2000, Windows 11] (link)

In your opinion, do you think this will be fast enough to run davinci decently well?

Many thanks for any advice or help on this!

PS And because of my location (a tiny island in the middle of Med) there's no other option than Amazon right now for delivery.

The specs with that suggested mini pc seem ok.

A quite basic way to work out if a pc in mind should be able to perform for certain stuff is maybe have a look on dedicated video pc/workstation builder websites (i.e, pugetsystems) and see what they recommend and sell, take note of the specs as a guide and compare elsewhere you might buy a new pc from (or just build your own if able of course).

In the pc you've mentioned it looks like only one 1000gb/1tb ssd is included, so that would be something to think about, for example you could get one, two or more extra storage drives installed minimum, so then a first drive is the main/primary drive (for OS/Win 11, Davinci, other apps etc.) and the second drive is used as a dedicated cache drive for Davinci Resolve (apparently this will help make things work faster overall by storing and using temporary smaller 'proxy' files from there), and the third where you save your project files, and lastly a fourth drive is where your source video files/media etc. is stored. Or that's how I understand a pc storage drive config. works optimally with video editing workflows from what I've gathered.

Hope this helps anyway!

Thanks, georget. I'll look at the extra storage options.

Another thing worth getting uprated is the cpu. In the one mentioned it has a 13700K installed. Just quite recently the successor 14700K is available for not much price difference. Going for a 14700K if there's only a slight extra cost would be a better choice.

From my experience AMD CPU offer more performance per unit money. Rendering uses on my machine all available cores and AMD is quite good in this realm.

I think you need a much better GPU.

Yeh, more gpu memory (than just 6gb) would be better for sure. I did at the time of reading the first post look up the rtx a2000 specs and (wrongly) gathered it has 12gb of memory, but I now see there is the 6gb variant too!

The HP Z2 mini G9 workstation with intel i7 13700K, 32GB RAM, 1000GB SSD, and NVIDIA RTX A2000 is a suitable upgrade for running DaVinci resolve smoothly. The improved specs including a more powerful processor and dedicated GPU will enhance performance and also you will get some information from doc.
